Friday, December 16

Science: Today we did a jigsaw note-taking activity on pages 65 - 69. Click here for a copy of the Unit 3 notes. No homework over break, unless packets were not completed and turned in today.

Geometry: Went over the 6.3 worksheet no homework over break!

Pre-Algebra: We went over two-step inequalities.  No homework.

Art 7/8: Andy Warhol projects are complete! Staff member photos have been delivered! Students are completing "Tumbling Names" colored pencil drawings.



Advanced Art grade 8: "Shattered Values" project is displayed in front showcase. Students are currently working on "Non-objective Circular" colored pencil drawings.

Language Arts: Students began with reading and or AR quizzes, AR quiz #2 for Second Marking Period was due today. At some point this year students will need to read and take an AR quiz on The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Students that chose to take one over the break were assigned a book. This will count toward the 3 AR quizzes due each marking period. We then did Literary Analysis Day 4 and we picked out an part of their short story to debate, with back up information.  Have a great break!

Algebra (Hill): Finish the chapter 5 test on page 349... except for problems 7, 8, and 9 which will not be checked.

Algebra (Graham): We worked today with scatter plots and best-fitting lines. No homework. When we return from break, we will review for a 2 days and then test on Thursday. Have a wonderful break!

Spanish I: The only homework over the break is to begin studying for the Spanish midterm (which will around January 17th - study guides have been passed out and are on my Berkley website, not the blog). ¡Felices fiestas!

Science: Completed investigation 3B- Conservation of energy. Lab corrections and Energy packets are due tomorrow.

Geometry: Went over the 6.2 worksheet and the 6.3 notes (similar triangles). 6.3 worksheet is homework.

Language Arts: Students Read quietly and took Ar quizzes, remember the second AR quiz for this marking period is due Friday. Today at lunch students who signed up took their retake or make up quiz for the Literary Elements. Only those that missed due to absence and with a 63% or lower are eligible to come take the quiz. We continued our Literary Analysis. A copy of the worksheet is attached and posted on my web page on the Berkley Schools website. Homework: READ and write a journal entry for home.

Humanities: Students finished current events, worked on 6.4 section assessment and began to watch a video on the Boston Massacre in class. Homework is to complete 6.4 section assessment.

Spanish I: Exs 7 pg 109, 8 & 9 pg 110. Due tomorrow

Pre-Algebra: We went over 2-step inequalities.  I handed out a homework page.  Students should do #1 - 4, 15, 16.

Science: Today we started investigation 3B by collected data on the track to see how drop height and mass affect the speed of a car on a hill. Lab corrections are due on Friday and the Energy packet is also due on Friday.

Geometry: Completed 6.2 notes (scale drawings) and went over the 6.1 homework. Tonight's homework is the 6.2 worksheet.

Language Arts: Students Read quietly and took Ar quizzes, remember the second AR quiz for this marking period is due Friday. If you are stuck on a problem look at the examples in that section or in your note taking guide for solution assistance... the answers are in the back of the book for odd

Science: Continued to work on the energy packet, any sheets not completed in class are homework.

Geometry: Went over the 6.1 notes (ratios, proportions and the geometric mean). 6.1 worksheet is homework.

Language Arts: Students Read quietly and took Ar quizzes, remember the second AR quiz for this marking period is due Friday. Students signed up for the "Literary Elements" quiz retake which will be given in my room during lunch today and Thursday. The signup sheet is posted by the door on the red FYI bulletin board. Only those that missed due to absence and with a 63% or lower are eligible to come take the quiz. We started our Literary Analysis. Each student chose one of the Short Stories we read over the last two weeks, we then expanded on two sentences from their story. I modeled this with the students using The Giver as an example. A copy of the poster is attached and posted on my web page on the Berkley Schools website. Homework: READ and write a journal entry for home.

Spanish I: Students have been given vocabulary and study guides for the midterm in January. Start studying them now.

Humanities: Students checked tests, reviewed chapter 6 and began to work on 6.3 free choice in class. Homework is to complete 6.3 and a current event by tomorrow.

Algebra (Graham): Discussed the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines. Great stuff!  Homework is worksheet 5.5 (1-9)

Science:  Discussed lab corrections and started our unit on Energy Transformations. Students read an article on energy transformation and worked on the Energy packet. The following pages are homework if they were not finished in class: Forms, #52, #53 & #54.

Geometry: Took the chapter 5 test, no homework!

Language Arts: Student wrote an in school journal entry: Write a journal entry on: - Invent the best dessert in the world - use sensory words when describing it. or - Explain what you think is the meaning of the saying "Beauty is only skin deep." or - a "moment" that is important to you. They were given time to read or take an AR quiz - remember the second AR quiz is due this Friday. Morning classes then took their Pop Quiz on Literary Terms. We started our Literary Analysis in Writer's Workshop. Homework: write in your journal- READ

Spanish I: Students should begin to study the vocab sheets for the midterm in January.

Algebra (Hill): Finish your section 5.1 and 5.2 worksheet



Algebra (Graham): We needed another day on section 5.4. 4th hour - #7,9, 13,15, 17, 7th hour - #8, 12, 14, 16, 18

Science: Took our Unit 2 test and labs were returned. Lab correction will be due by next Friday, have a great weekend!

Geometry: Went over the practice test and made a foldable to help practice the centers & relationships inside of a triangle. Homework is the chapter 5 review, odds only. Chapter 5 test is Monday.

Algebra (Graham): Homework: worksheet 5.4B (evens only). Have a great weekend!

Humanities: Students reviewed for Monday's test, shared current events and discussed the Boston Massacre in class. Homework is to study for the test on Monday.

Pre-Algebra: We continued to talk about one-step inequalities with multiplication or division. Remember, when you multiply or divide by a negative, you flip the symbol. Homework-worksheet 3.5 # 5 - 8, and 10 - 30 (evens).

Spanish I: Vocabulary quiz 2.1 on Monday.

Language Arts: We did the Plot Plan for "The Tell Tale Heart" (which we read yesterday), and read "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupaussant. We will create the Plot Plan on Monday and begin our Literary Essays. Remember, the next due date for AR quizzes this month is Friday, Dec 16th. Homework: Read and write in your journal.

Science: Went over the practice test and discussed good study skills to prepare for tomorrow's test. Homework is to STUDY!

Geometry: Went over the 5.6 worksheet and discussed indirect proofs in more detail. Quizzes were also returned. Practice test is homework. Chapter 5 test is Monday.

Language Starts: Students Continued their Short Story Unit with reading "The Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe and completed a Short Story Plot Sheet with all the pertinent information. Please remember that the second AR quiz is due before we go on break next week. Homework: Read and a Home Journal entry.

Advanced Art Grade 8: Students have just completed a 2 day drawing for a holiday art installation at the Chase Building downtown. We are now moving onto "Non-Objective" art. Students are choosing a non-objective idea by looking through magazines and using view finders. They are looking for non- recognizable compositions that show texture, value, contrast, line, shape etc. These art pieces will be completed using colored pencil.


Art grade 7/8 : We are wrapping up Andy Warhol. Students have completed 3 photo tinting assignments. Two of themselves and one of a staff member. They will be writing letters to the staff member and delivering these as a gift in the next few days.

Pre-Algebra: We started to talk about inequalities that include multiplication and division.  No homework.

Algebra (Graham): 4th hour - p.296 (4-44 multiples of 4), story problem worksheet, and How to... page. 7th hour - story problem worksheet, and How to... page

Humanities: I am out sick again and will try to be in tomorrow. We will review for the test and share current events tomorrow. The test will be on Monday.

8th Graders took the ACT Explore Test in hours #1-3 today.

Science: Reviewed Newton's Laws of Motion for Friday's test.

Geometry: Did not meet today due to the explore test.

Humanities: Students took the Explore test in the morning. Students finished the video on the causes of the American Revolution and continued to work on the test review that they received yesterday in class. Homework is to complete the review and current event by Wednesday. We will check the review Wednesday and take the Chapter 5 test on Thursday.

Spanish I: 2nd hour has their 1.3 test tomorrow.

Pre-Algebra: No class due to the explore test.

December P.E. QUESTION: Explain the importance of a proper warm up and cool down.  Define the following components of physical fitness: muscular strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. Describe exercises for each component and the muscles they work. Papers should be at least one page in length, completed on time, information accurate and neat. Paper due on or before Wed., Dec. 14.

Algebra (Hill): Homework: Study your notes from chapter 4 and section 6.7. Study your exam reviews, and the practice problems I gave you in class on Monday. Use the odd problems in your book to test yourself with different problems in chapter 4 and section 6.7.  Test Tomorrow! Study hard, and you will do great!

Science: Began working on the review for Friday's test by playing Jeapardy. Labs are due tomorrow!

Language Arts: Students met with Mrs. Weiss regarding the EXPLORE test. Homework: READ! Write a journal entry for this evening.

Pre-Algebra: We started to work on basic inequalities. No homework.

Algebra (Hill) Your chapter 4 and section 6.7 test is coming up fast! Practice Practice Practice...Study your notes, study your reviews, and try all kinds of book problems in chapter 4 and section 6.7.  Remember to finish the practice problems I gave you today in class.

Science: Peer reviewed the "Is the Force With You?" lab today, see yesterday's post for the rubric. Final draft is due on Tuesday, December 6. Unit 2 test is Friday, December 9.

Geometry: Completed the 5.4 notes and did an activity the investigate the Centroid of a triangle. The Chapter 5 quiz was assigned as homework and is due on Monday.

Language Arts: Students wrote in the journals using the following prompts:

- Write some sayings for fortune cookies that you would like to get yourself.
- Invent a game or toy other 8th graders would buy.
- Write about a "moment" of importance to you.
They were given time to read or take an AR Quiz, we then finished our Literary Terms Presentation.

Humanities: Students checked 5.2, were introduced to 5.3 and began to work on 5.3 section assessment in class. Homework folders are due Monday. Chapter 5 test will be Thursday. Study guides will be provided on Monday.

Spanish I: Unit 1.3 test on Monday.

Algebra (Hill): Test Tuesday. Study chapter 4 & section 6.7 notes, homework and book examples....review problems are very similar to test problems!!!

Science: Worked on the critique reflection section of the "Is the Force With You?" lab and also worked on rough drafts. Rough drafts for peer review are due tomorrow, the rubric is attached. Final drafts of the lab are due on Tuesday, December 6 and the Unit 2 test is Friday, December 9.

Geometry: Went over the 5.3 homework and started the 5.4 notes (medians & altitudes). We will complete the notes tomorrow and do a foldable activity, the quiz has been moved to Monday. 5.4 worksheet, front side only, is homework.

Language Arts: Students worked quietly on their "school" journal entry of the day. They chose from one of the following:

- Write about a person that is your hero and why.
- What game or "toy" do you want but don't have and why.
- Write about a moment of importance to you.
They then read quietly or took an AR quiz. We began our mini-unit on Short Stories with Literary Terms.

Algebra (Hill): Study your chapter 4 and section 6.7 notes.

Science: Worked on writing up the data analysis & conclusions portions of the "Is the Force With You?" lab. Tomorrow we will work on the critique reflection and rough drafts, see yesterday's post for a copy of the lab planner. Rough draft for peer review is due on Friday, December 2 & the final draft of the lab is due on Tuesday, December 6. The Unit 2 Test is Friday, December 9.

Geometry: Went over the 5.2 homework and completed the 5.3 notes (Incenter & Angle Bisectors). 5.3 worksheet is homework. Chapter 5 quiz is on Friday.

Pre-Algebra: Today students worked on a practice quiz.  We will review tomorrow.  Most students finished the quiz in class.  It is homework if it is not done.  Quiz is Friday.

Spanish I: Finish the worksheet you got in class yesterday. This will be due tomorrow. Don't forget you have a unit test on 1.3 on Monday.

Language Arts: Students worked quietly on Grammar #10 - Run ons and Fragments. They were given time to work on their AR quizzes (first one due today) and read their next book. We then moved to our Writer's Workshop Corner to reflect on our Launching Unit (notes attached and on my webpage on Berkley website) . We reflected on wether we truly gave ourselves to the workshop or if we just went through the motions. If we progressed as writers and met the goals we set on Day 1 or if we were just trudging through. How we can work on meeting those goals in the future, as we are all writers, no matter what profession we aspire to. Homework: Finish Grammar #10, read, and write in journal.

Humanities: Students checked 5.1 section assessment and shared current events in class. No homework.

Algebra (Hill): Homework finish the section 6.7 worksheet all problems.

Science: Completed collecting data and made graphs for "Is the Force With You?" lab. Research is homework, tomorrow we will work on the data analysis, conclusion & critique reflection sections of the paper. Rought drafts are due on Friday, December 2 for peer review, final drafts are due on Tuesday, December 6. The Unit 2 Test is Friday, December 9.

Geometry: Went over the 5.1 homework and 5.2 notes (perpendicular bisectors & circumcenter). 5.2 worksheet is homework & chapter 5 quiz is Friday.

Pre-Algebra: We continued with lesson 3.3. The students are doing so well! Homework is worksheet 3.3, #3,4,10-14,21,22.

Spanish I: No homework today, apart from studying for the unit 1.3 test on Monday.

Algebra (Hill): (Optional) Page 275 Chapter 4 Chapter Test All Problems

Algebra (Graham): We graphed inequalities with 2 variables. Homework is worksheet 6.7. Chapter Test this Friday! We will be reviewing Wednesday and Thursday.


Humanities: Students finished presentations and began to work on 5.1 in class. Homework is to complete 5.1 section assessment and finish a current event by tomorrow.

Language Arts: Students handed in Grammar Lesson 8 Complements: Subject Complements. We then began Grammar Lesson 9: Complements: Objects of Verbs - we as usual, did the first page together and they finished the rest. We then convened to the Writer's Workshop corner, we discussed getting stuck on one topic and then wrote "Stream of Consciousness" starting with a different topic than we have written about in our journals. Homework: Grammar Lesson 9, Write, READ! FYI: the first AR quiz for 2nd Marking Period is due tomorrow.

Science: Today we started data collection for "Is the Force With You?". Tomorrow we will complete data collection and begin working on graphs, which will continue on Wednesday. Completion of research is homework and rough drafts for peer review must be complete by Friday. Final drafts will be due on Tuesday, December 6 & the Unit 2 Test will be on Friday, December 9.

Geometry:  Today we completed an investigation regarding the midpoints of triangles and took the notes on 5.1 (Midsegment theorem & Coordinate proofs). 5.1 worksheet is homework and chapter 5 quiz will be Friday.

Pre-Algebra: We started to solve equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign.  Homework-worksheet 3.3, # 5-9.

Spanish I: Exs 1-5 pgs 90-91 are due tomorrow. Unit test 1.3 is on Monday, December 5th

Language Arts: Students completed Grammar #8 (Subject Complements) and were given time to read and take AR quizzes. Don't forget, Wednesday is the deadline for the first AR quiz for this marking period. We then moved on to Day 5 of the Writer's Workshop. We spoke about truths and how they make writing more interesting. Attached is the note sheet from today's meeting.

Algebra (Graham): We went over our "problem solving workshop" problems that were handed in last week. We are working hard to get past the idea if it is a word problem, it must be too difficult. We discussed direct variation (finding the constant of variation) and graphing lines using 3 different methods. Chapter Test this Friday!!! Homework: worksheet reviewing slope and y intercept.

Algebra (Hill): Homework finish the section 4.5 packet
Humanities: Students presented their colonies project in class.No homework.

Geometry: Took the chapter 4 test, no homework! Congratulations Geometry students on a 98% Test Average!

Science: Today we planned out our next inquiry lab "Is the Force with you?". Students will begin collecting data next week so they need to come prepared with any materials they need on Monday. No homework, but students could begin working on the research portion of their lab.

Spanish I: Exs 16, 17 and 18 pg 83. Due Monday, Nov 28. 1.3 unit test will be on Monday, Dec 5th. Study guides are on the blog and on my Berkley website. Click here for study guide.

Pre-Algebra: We did a mini assessment of lessons 3.1 and 3.2.  No homework.

Algebra (Hill): Homework finish the section 4.5 and 4.6 worksheet

Algebra (Graham): Finished up section 4.5. No homework... enjoy the long weekend! Our next test is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 2. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Language Arts: Students worked on Grammar #8 Subject Complements. We then moved on to our Writer's Workshop. I read an example of a "shareable piece" to the class and they commented on where there was a lack of detail and gave me good insightful comments on my piece. We then broke up and conferenced with our partners. NO HOMEWORK - We will finish Grammar #8 on Monday. No required journal entries required but students are encouraged to write about their Thanksgiving as it will be full of "moments" for our journal entries. Have a great Thanksgiving.

Humanities: Students finished the Geography Bee, shared current events and watched Student News in class. No homework. Have a happy Thanksgiving.

Geometry: Went over the practice test and started working on the Chapter 4 review. Chapter 4 review (pages 282-285) odds is homework. Chapter 4 test is tomorrow!

Science: Completed the notes for Unit 2 and practiced calculating momentum. Homework is the momentum worksheet (# 1, 2, 5, 7 & 9), students MUST make problem solving boxes!

Humanities: Students turned in colonies projects and participated in the first rounds of the Geography Bee in class. No homework.

Language Arts: Students handed in their work from Friday. Grammar Lesson 7 was distributed. Students were given time to read or take AR quizzes. We continued our Writer's Workshop with Day 4 and discussing conferencing. Homework: Finish Grammar Lesson 7. Look through jottings in our Writer's Journal. Expand on one piece that we are willing to share with our partner. We will be conferencing tomorrow (Tuesday) so be prepared with a piece that is ready for a conference.

Pre-Algebra: We continued to work on 2-step equations.  Today we focused on using these equations to find the perimeter of figures.  We also worked on story problems.  These are very difficult to do.  Homework-worksheet 3.2, #14 - 20, and 22.

Spanish I: The 1.3 test will not be until the week of Dec 5th (probably on Dec 5th). We will finish the book exercises this week, and will do review exercises next week. The study guide will be handed out next week, but it will be on the blog and my Berkley website by the end of this week. Today's exercises #13, 14, and 15 on pgs 82-83 are due tomorrow.

Geometry: Went over the 4.8 homework and practiced writing proofs. The chapter 4 practice test is homework. Chapter 4 test is Tuesday, November 22.

Science: Completed investigation 3-A, momentum and the 3rd law. Quizzes were returned and quiz corrections were discussed. Quiz corrections are due on Tuesday, the quiz correction form is attached.

Art 7/8 : Andy Warhol inspired photo tinting continued. Most students are on picture two of themselves. Next week each student will do a photo of a staff member!

Advanced Art Grade 8: Shattered Value drawing continued. These should be completed before Thanksgiving break.

Algebra (Graham): Finished section 4.4. Homework 4.4 worksheet and problem solving worksheet (1-6). 4.4 worksheet is attached. Have a great weekend.

Humanities: Students turned in 4.4 and worked on a colonies project in class. The project is due Monday. Please see the attached rubric for expectations.

Spanish I: Ex 10, 11, & 12 pgs 80-81. Due Monday.

Science: Investigation 3-A, Momentum and the 3rd Law. Quizzes are graded but there are a few students who still need to complete the quiz, so I will pass them back tomorrow. Students will have an opportunity to complete quiz corrections.

Geometry: Went over the 4.7 homework and 4.8 notes (congruence transformations). 4.8 worksheet is homework. Chapter 4 test is Tuesday.

Language Arts: Students worked on Grammar Lesson #3 Verbs - Read and took AR quizzes at the beginning of class. We then moved on to Day 3 of Launching an essay in Writer's Workshop. All notes are attached. Homework: finish Grammar Lesson #3, write, read.

Pre-Algebra: We continued with 2-step equations.  Today we had to write an equation from a story problem and then solve it.  Homework is worksheet 3.1, #23 - 27.

Humanities: Students finished sharing current events, were introduced to 4.4 and began to work on a "free choice" for 4.4 in class. Homework is to complete the free choice by tomorrow.

Algebra (Graham) We did a basketball problem solving exercise today. Our focus this year in math is to help our students become excellent problem solvers. I have attached a copy of the exercise, if you are interested. We started section 4.4 today-didn't get very far. No official homework tonight, however, I did assign some more problem solving work that is due on Monday.

Geometry: Went over teh 4.6 homework and took notes on 4.7 (Isosceles & Equilateral Triangles). 4.7 worksheet is homework. Chapter 4 test is Tuesday, November 22.

Language Arts: Students worked on a Grammar worksheet on Simple Subjects and Predicates, if it was not completed in class it is homework. We then continued our Launching of Writer's Workshop. I read an excerpt from Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris (if you have read this I edited it) and then discussed hopes and regrets. Science: Went over the Mass vs. Weight worksheet and had a conversation about perserverance and the importance of taking the time to read over examples and apply what we've learned to a new situation. Took notes on Speed vs. Time graphs and connected those notes to the data we collected on Friday. Unit 2 quiz is tomorrow, students are allowed to use notes & worksheets from this unit to help them on the quiz, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't study! The use of notes & worksheets is only helpful if students are familiar with and understand the information.

Geometry: Went over the 4.6 notes (Using corresponding parts of congruent triangles) and quizzes were returned. 4.6 worksheet is homework. Chapter 4 test is Tuesday, November 22.

Language Arts: Students handed in their Grammar Homework sheet. We then began our Writer's Workshop by talking about the Goals, and how to Launch an Essay. Students are to bring their Writer's Notebook to and from class/home each day. Every night students are to set aside some time to write. This is homework every night. This writing is not formal, it is "moment gathering" or "topic gathering" for later formal writing.  Attached are the goals we discussed today and the strategies we discussed. Science: Completed investigation on Newton's 2nd law and shared results. Lecture notes on mass vs. weight, free all & gravity. Homework is Mass vs. Weight worksheet (#6 is different on the worksheet handed out in class than here). Quiz on Wednesday.

Geometry: Went over the 4.5 worksheet and multiple ways to do the last proof & took the chapter 4 quiz. 4.6 notes are homework. Chapter 4 test is Tuesday.

Humanities: Students reviewed 4.1, were introduced to 4.2 and began working on "quiz" questions and answers in class. Homework is to complete the questions.

Algebra (Hill) Today we studied how to rearrange equations into point slope form. Students need to finish their sec 4.1, 4.7 and 3.8 home work packet.

Pre-Algebra: Students took the chapter 2 test.  No homework
 
Language Arts: Many students were out due to a field trip today, so we Read and took AR quizzes.  Students did a quick review of Subject and Predicate on a worksheet. Please remind your students to come to school prepared each day. In English students should have: Binder, pen or pencil, an AR book, any novel the class is currently reading. Students are coming to class expecting to be able to run back to their locker....daily. Students are not allowed to go to their lockers after class has started. Students need to be in the habit of being sure they have their supplies before they come to class.

Algebra (Graham): We had a surprise quiz today. Finished up section 4.2. No homework tonight.

Science: Collected data on the incline track to investigate how the car's acceleration changes as it moves down the track. No homework. Unit 2 quiz on Wednesday, November 16.

Geometry: Went over the 4.4 homework, proofs are getting so much easier! YEAH! Completed the 4.5 notes (proving triangles congruent by ASA & AAS). 4.5 worksheet is homework. Quiz on Monday, chapter 4 test Tuesday, November 22.

Language Arts: Students completed their The Giver final tests, read AR books and turned in any late books or Reader's Journals. It was a nice calm day!  Have a great weekend.

Science: Went over Newton's 1st & 2nd law as well as the formula for the 2nd law, practiced solving problems. Newton's 2nd Law worksheet is homework, students must be careful to use the correct units (force in Newtons (N), mass in kilograms (kg), and acceleration in meters/second/second (m/s/s)). Another hint is that acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s/s.

Geometry: Went over the 4.3 homework and 4.4 notes (proving triangles congruent by SAS & HL). 4.4 worksheet is homework. Chapter 4 quiz on Monday, November 14, Chapter 4 test Tuesday, November 22.

Algebra (Graham): Finished up discussion about functions. We focused today on solving for a variable (section 3.8).  Homework: worksheet practicing that skill.

Algebra (Hill): Finish the graphing using function notation work sheet.

Geometry: Went over the 4.2 homework, completed an activity to demonstrate SSS triangle congruence, and then completed the 4.3 notes (SSS triangle congruence). 4.3 worksheet is homework. Chapter 4 quiz on Monday, November 14. Chapter 4 test Tuesday, November 22.

Pre-Algebra: Students were given a review for their test on Friday.  We will review tomorrow.  Homework is to finish the review.

Language Arts: Students reviewed for their final test on The Giver with a "Vocabulary/Character Bee" students were able to show their vocabulary and story line prowess while earning WOW tickets. Tomorrow: Final Test on The Giver and Vocabulary lists 4-7, Reader's Journal due - all chapter section notes filled out - cover art illustrated, Book turn in for The Giver.

Science: Students completed the Newton's 2nd law lab by comparing the acceleration of the car on the flat track compared to the level section. We also went over the Acceleration homework from Friday. No homework. The Unit 2 quiz will be on Wednesday, November 16.

Geometry: Went over the 4.1 homework and 4.2 notes (triangle congruence). Proofs will be a major part of this unit, students struggling with proofs are encouraged to take advantage of the help Mrs. Petersen offers Mon-Thurs during lunch. 4.2 worksheet is homework. 4.1-4.5 quiz will be on Monday and the Chapter 4 test will be on Tuesday, November 22.

Algebra (Hill): Chapter 6 test today no homework.

Pre-Algebra: We started to solve simple equations with decimals.  Homework-worksheet 2.7, # 2 - 21, 31.

Language Arts: Students were given reading time and AR quiz time. We then checked the vocab review flip charts for lists 4-7. Together we made a character review flip chart, taken directly from the final. I read the essay options to the students so they could start formulating good 8th grade responses.Homework: - Study vocab for vocab bee tomorrow. Get an AR book - that is Friday's grade.

Spanish I: Vocabulary quiz 1.3 is on Monday, November 14th. Anyone who was absent today must take the 1,2 unit test at lunch time by this Friday.

Science: Investigation 2-B part 1, Newton's 2nd law and acceleration. Unit 2 quiz is scheduled for Wed. November 16. No homework.

Geometry: Began chapter 4, triangles, with the 4.1 notes. 4.1 worksheet is homework. Chapter 4 quiz is scheduled for Friday. Chapter 3 tests were returned and we briefly discussed the test. Students are always welcome at lunch if they have additional questions.

Pre-Algebra: We worked on lesson 2.6, multiplying and dividing with a variable. Homework-worksheet 2.6, # 1 - 20.

Language Arts: Students began their review for The Giver test on Thursday. We made "flip charts" for vocabulary lists 4, 5, 6, & 7. These are due for a homework grade tomorrow. We will also be making charts for the characters in The Giver and having a vocabulary bee on Wednesday. Thursday: The Giver Test & Reader's Journal due (all entries, vocab, and final draft illustration). Students will also be handing in their novels on Thursday as well. Homework: READ! Make vocab "Flip Charts" for lists 4-7.

Algebra (Hill): Chapter 6 Test Tomorrow. Homework finish even review problems in your chapter 6 review.

Spanish 1: All work assigned last week while I was absent is due by tomorrow. 1.2 Unit test is tomorrow.

Language Arts: Today's quiz was only Vocabulary. Class discussions were so animated and interesting yesterday we never got to the end of the book! We will be finishing our discussions today. Completed Reader's Journal and Cover Illustrations due Thursday, November 10th, The Giver Final Test Thursday, November 10th. "Read In" Friday, November 11th (Quiet Reading, a time for students to get a good head start on their AR books for 2nd card marking)

Science: Began the unit 2 notes with a jigsaw notetaking activity. Click here for the unit 2 notes blank outline. 

Geometry: Went over the Chapter 3 practice test and discussed constructions. Homework is to complete the Chapter 3 review (odds only) and to practice constructions for tomorrow's test.

Humanities: Students finished sharing current events, completed atlas work were introduced to chapter 3 and began work on 3.1 section assessment in class. Homework is to complete atlas work and 3.1 section assessment.

Language Arts: Journals were checked, vocabulary was found within the text, and our class discussion was not completed....lots to discuss and many questions. Tomorrow's quiz will be vocabulary only. Next week will be all review of The Giver. Final test will be on Thursday, November 10th. Final draft of the Reader's Journal is also due on Thursday. Students will need these to review pertinent parts of the book.  Final draft of the Reader's Journal includes all chapter sections filled out completely and with insightful entries/questions that show student was reading the book. A final draft of a cover....student's favorite scene or imagery from the book. Final draft of an illustration is something that can't be erased. If students want to use pencil (due to the black and white community) they must cover their illustration with clear contact paper or laminate so that it cannot be erased. Don't forget we have a fresh batch of AR books to be read for this marking period. 3 more books, that equates to a book a month.

Algebra (Graham): Test today! No homework.

Pre-Algebra: We went over lesson 2.4. It was pretty easy. We started the homework in class. If they did not finish, it is homework. Homework is worksheet 2.4, # 1 - 18.

Spanish I: Reminder: All work done while I have been absent is due by Monday, November 7th. you will go over it tomorrow with Ms. Campbell in class. Geometry: Went over the 3.6 worksheet (students need to remember to use EVERYTHING they have learned in a chapter to figure out how to solve problems sometimes, we're working on having a more zen-like attitude towards mathematics) & practiced constructions (big deep breath in, deep breath out). The practice test is homework. Chapter 3 test is Friday.

Science: Completed investigation 2-A (The Law of Inertia) by seeing how mass affects speed on a downhill compared to the flat track.

Humanities: Students shared current events, completed atlas work and finished taking notes on a video on the English colonies. Homework is to complete atlas work.

Language Arts: Students wrote for 20 minutes "stream of consciousness" on one of the three topics:

1 - What is one goal or hope you have for the future? Explain why it is important to you.
2 - Write about a superstition you believe in. Explain why you believe in it.
3 - Your topic.
We then worked on our sentence structure in our Grammar unit. Homework: READ! Completed Journal for The Giver is due Thursday, November 10th. Final Test for The Giver and Vocabulary lists #4-#7 Thursday, November 10th

Algebra (Hill): Today we reviewed how to solve inequalities that include an absolute value.

Humanities: Students continued to work with atlases as an introduction to the thirteen British colonies. Current events due tomorrow.

Pre-Algebra: Some students took the quiz on lessons 2.1 - 2.3. I gave the students the option of taking it tomorrow due to Halloween. Those who did not take it today will tomorrow. They will swap assignments. Those who did not take quiz must do pages 108 and 109, # 5 - 24.

Art 7/8: 1st hr. - Demonstration on using oil pastels and blending stumps to create our Andy Warhol inspired photos. 4th and 5th hrs.- Discuss the history of Andy Warhol.

Advanced Art grade 8: Demonstration on "shattering" the subject in their current drawings.

Algebra (Graham) Reviewed section 6.6 today. We have a test covering sections 6.4, 6.5, 6.6 on Thursday! Remember I am available before school and at lunch for extra help. I have attached the review that students will be given tomorrow if they want to get a head start. Our homework today was worksheet 6.6 which I have also included.

Science: Began Unit 2: Newton's Laws of Motion with Investigation 2-A, which involved collecting speed data for cars of varying mass on a flat track. No homework!

Geometry: Went over the 3.4 homework and 3.5 notes (equations of lines using slope-intercept and standard form) and quizzes were returned.. This section should come very easy to students as it is all review from algebra. 3.5 worksheet is homework. Chapter 3 test is Friday

Humanities: Students discussed chapter 1-2 quiz, were introduced to English colonization and worked on atlas sheets in class. No homework. Current events due Wednesday. Happy Halloween.

Pre-Algebra: We reviewed for a quiz tomorrow on lessons 2.1 - 2.3.  Students were given the review sheet last Wednesday.

Journal for chapters 20-23 is due Thursday - every student should include their theory on what the end of the book means....we will be debating/discussing that next week (as there is no "right" answer). Chapters 20-23 quiz is Friday as usual. Final test for The Giver will begin NEXT Thursday, November 10th. This will include vocabulary from all chapter sections as well as content questions.  Please remember, with a new marking period come 3 new AR books due. Science: Discussed the "Multiple Intelligence" Inventory and did a group activity with our new table groups.

Geometry: Completed the 3.4 notes and took the chapter 3 quiz. The rest of the 3.4 worksheet is homework.

Algebra (Graham): Algebra (4th hour only). Worksheet 6.5 (all)-due on Monday

Language Arts: Morning classes took their The Giver chapters 16-19 quiz, it is looking like afternoon classes will take their quizzes on Monday.  The Halloween festivities and band concerts are going to be taking the majority of class time, and I don't want students feeling rushed.

Humanities: Students were introduced to the New England colonies in class today. No homework.

Pre-Algebra: We worked on a practice quiz for our quiz on Tuesday on 2.1 through 2.3. We will review on Monday.

Science: Students were given an opportunity to go over their tests from yesterday. We also completed a multiple intelligence inventory.  Labs will be passed back at conferences tonight and tomorrow or in school on Friday.

Geometry: Went over 3.2 & 3.3 homework as well as the 3.3 notes. Began notes on section 3.4. Homework is 3.4 worksheet, #1-6, 22-24 & 28-30. Chapter 3 quiz is tomorrow.

Language Arts: Chapters 16-19 class discussion was very animated. Students are loving this book.  Quiz times are staggered due to half days and the Halloween Parade.  * Hours 1 and 2 will take their quiz tomorrow.  * Hours 5 and 7 MIGHT take their quiz on Friday, therefore should be prepared to take the quiz if we  have time, if not they should review the information Sunday evening in preparation for Monday .  * Monday will be the definite day for 6th hour (as I will most likely not see them at all on Friday).  Did you follow that? I'm not sure I did :) Please go over this with your student so they understand the craziness. Regardless of the date of taking the quiz, this quiz will be the first grade in the new marking period. The final chapter section is due next week. Thursday. Looking forward to seeing parents at conferences.

Art 7/8: We are starting a unit on Andy Warhol . Students will be participating in a "photo tinting" assignment. I will be taking black and white photos of all students. I will enlarge these to 8" x 10" photos. Then students will add color to their own photo by adding oil pastels.
 Advanced Art grade 8: All "flower puns" have been completed and graded. We have now moved on to the "shattered values" project. Most students have chosen a subject and started basic line drawings. I demonstrated the "grid transfer" technique yesterday in class. Some students have started transferring their smaller drawings onto larger drawing paper.

Pre-Algebra: We talked about distributive property and simplifying expressions.  Homework-worksheet 2.3, #11 - 14, 22 - 24.

Algebra (Hill): Chapter 3 Test Today , No Home Work

Humanities: Students corrected chapter 2 tests and listened to a presentation from Mrs. Weiss in class. Current events are due tomorrow.

Pre-Algebra: We talked about distributive property and combined like terms.  Homework-worksheet 2.2,  #3 - 23 (odds), and 22.

Humanities: Mr. Lyskawa was not in the building today. Students took a test on chapters 1 and 2. No homework. Current events due Wednesday.

Algebra (Hill): Start studying for Wednesdays exam covering chapter 3 and 6. Homework finish the review packet you picked up/ started in class today. Note: If you can answer every question in the review packet correctly the test will be a piece of cake. If you get a question wrong in the review check your notes, find a similar problem and review the correct solution steps.


Language Arts: Students had a substitute today, I was at an ELA district meeting. Science: Today we went over the test review/study guide for Tuesday's test. Homework is to study!

Geometry: Shared our conditional advertisements/slogans and 3.1 notes. 3.1 worksheet is homework.

Humanities: Students took AR quizzes (almost there with 4 class periods left of 1st marking period) and studied for their The Giver 11-15 quiz. New Vocabulary words were posted in the room and on my Berkley Schools website.  Quiz was taken, Illustrations and publishable pieces were turned in. Homework: READ! Next week's chapters are 16-19 due to short week - Chapters are due for class discussion by WEDNESDAY! Quiz will be on Thursday or Friday due to the short week/days for Parent Teacher Conferences.

Art 7/8: Aluminum tooling project is coming to an end. Students have cut their own frames using exacto knives, designed frames completed them by using colored pencils and the layering technique. Grading rubrics have been discussed. These projects are due by next Tues. at the end of class.
 Advanced Art Grade 8: "Flower Puns" have been graded and many are displayed in the front showcase. They are stunning! We are beginning a project called "Shattered Values." Students are now choosing their subject matter. They will complete a simple line drawing on a 6" x 9" paper. Then, using the grid transfer method, will transfer their drawing onto a larger sheet of paper. (12" x 18")

Science: "How Fast Am I?" labs were turned in today. 3rd hour completed the Unit 1 review, if not finished it is due tomorrow. 4th-7th hours worked on simile reviews. Unit 1 Test is Tuesday, October 25.

Geometry: Took the chapter 2 test. Homework is to write advertisements as conditional statements.

Spanish I: Flash cards on 1.3 due by Monday, Oct 24th. Exs 4 & 5 pg 55, and exs 6 & 7 pg 57 are due tomorrow, Friday Oct 21st

Pre-Algebra: We worked on terms of an expression and simplifying expressions.  Students were given a worksheet to complete for homework.

Language Arts: Students worked with their vocabulary words in review for tomorrow's quiz. We then had the class discussion for Chapters 11-15 in The Giver. The students are really enjoying the book and discussing Jonas's "memories". Only 5 class periods left of the marking period....please be sure that your student has taken three AR quizzes. I update the grade book every other day with AR, so it is as up to date as I can keep it. Homework: Study for vocab and 11-15 quiz. READ

Humanities: Students reviewed 3.3 and developed a study guide for our chapter test on Monday. No homework.

Algebra (Hill): Today we studied how to identify equations and inequalities with infinite solutions and no solutions. Homework finish the section 3.4 worksheet handed out at the end of class.

Wednesday, October 19

Science: Continued working on the review/study guide for Tuesday's test. "How Fast Am I?" lab is due tomorrow! My goal is to have the labs graded to return to parents at conferences next week.

Geometry: No class today, MEAP. Test is tomorrow!

Humanities: Students worked corrected 2.2 section assessment, shared current events and worked on 2.3 guided questions in class. Homework is to complete 2.3 guided questions.

Pre-Algebra: No class, MEAP.

Language Arts: Students wrapped up illustrations. No morning classes met. Due tomorrow - The Giver chap 11-15 read, journal, vocab pages.

Tuesday, October 17

Science: "How Fast Am I" labs are due Thursday, October 19. Today we began our review for the Unit 1 Test. We will continue working on this review tomorrow and it will be due by Friday. The test is Tuesday, October 25.

Geometry: No Class today, Test is Thursday

Humanities: Students corrected 2.1 notes, read 2.2 and worked on 2.2 section assessment in class. Homework is to complete 2.2. Current events due Wednesday.

Pre-Algebra: No Class, MEAP

Language Arts: MEAP day! Work days for all classes that met. Students worked on their Illustrations, Read somewhat silently, took AR quizzes. Remember 3 AR books need to be read and quizzed by next Wednesday. We saw what one "0" can do to a grade, can you imagine what three would do? Requirements for illustration/publication portion of Science Fiction.
- Publishable written piece:
- Title - 24-36 pt font
- By line
- body of paper 12pt font, double spaced, EITHER indented or double spaced paragraphs, not both.
- Illustration:
- Best work (not everyone is Monet - but give best effort)
- Final Draft (no pencil drawings...colored/colorful)
These are due by Wednesday for afternoon classes, Friday for Morning Classes. The Giver 11-15 journal/vocab due Thursday. Happy MEAPing - remember to bring a novel to class for AR reading.

Algebra(Graham) Worked in class on Homework 3.4 and 6.3. If not finished in class, they need to finish it for homework. We are working on equation and inequality solving. There can be a solution ( like x=4) or no solution or all real numbers as a solution. This is causing a little bit of stress. Ask your son or daughter to solve: 3x - 4 = 2x + 8 - 5x and explain the answer.

Science: Peer review for "How Fast Am I?", the final draft of the lab is due on Thursday, october 20 (click here for the rubric). I will return these labs to parents at conferences next week. Unit 1 test is Tuesday, October 25, we will spend the rest of this week reviewing for the test.

Geometry: Practiced proofs for Thursday's test. Homework is to bring in a slogan or advertisement for a favorite product or company. Geometry class does not meet again until Thursday due to MEAP testing.

Language Arts: Students were reminded that there are two weeks left of the marking period and many do not have all three of their AR books done. This week (and last week) is perfect for catching up on reading. The ONLY thing you can do after MEAP is read a book. I updated all grades on Friday evening in regards to AR. Any quizzes that have been taken have been entered with the name of the book that coincides with the quiz grade. Please check Family Access and speak with your student. Students were given time to read, take AR quizzes, or work on illustrations. We then discussed the new vocabulary list (attached) and worked quietly. I will not see morning classes tomorrow or Wednesday. Illustrations and final published pieces are due from morning classes on Monday, afternoon classes on Wednesday.

Humanities: Students received homework grades, read 2.1 and worked on questions for 2.1 in class. Homework is to complete 2.1 questions. Current events due Wednesday.

Phys. Ed. Question for October: Now that school has started, how has your physical activity level changed? How are you fitting in daily exercise? What are some of the activities you are doing and how often? What activities influence you to be inactive? Essays should be informative, neat and completed on time. Papers are due on or before Thursday, October 20, 2011.

Pre-Algebra: We did a mini assessment of the properties we have learned.  We started to talk about the distributive property.  No homework.

Algebra (Hill): Today we studied how to solve multistage equations. Our homework is to finish our section 3.3 worksheet we received in class today.

Algebra (Graham): Trying to keep it light because of the MEAP, but we still need to stay close the high school schedule. Discussed sections 3.4/6.3. Homework is to finish the notes.

Science: Today we went over the Critique Reflection portion for the "How Fast Am I?" lab and students then were able to either start on their rough drafts, complete their research or any other work they needed to do for the lab. The rough draft of the lab is due on Monday (the lab planner does NOT count as the rough draft) and the final draft is due on Thursday, October 20. Click here for a copy of the rubric.

Geometry: Today we went over most of the practice test. Because we didn't get to finish our discussion I have decided to move the test to Thursday, October 20 (Geometry doesn't meet on Tuesday or Wednesday next week because of the MEAP). Homework is to complete the chapter review on pages 134-137, odds only.

Humanities: Students turned in homework folders and continued our discussion of European exploration in class today. No homework. Go State!

Spanish I: vocab quiz on 1.2 (pg 69) on Monday, October 17th.

Language Arts: Students took their Vocabulary/The Giver chap 1-10 quiz and then were given time to take AR quizzes, read, or work on their Science Fiction rewrite & illustration. The grade for the rewrite & illustration will be separate from the written piece grade. This will help with any unsatisfactory grades.  Morning classes will turn in their publishable written piece and illustration on Friday, October 21st. Afternoon classes will turn in their publishable written piece and illustration on Wednesday, October 19th. This is due to the four morning classes that have been taken up by the MEAP. Homework: READ don't forget all students have three books to read on their own and take the AR quiz on for each marking period. Time management is key, students should have at least two quizzes taken by now to be up to date.

Pre-Algebra: We continued to talk about the Commutative, Associative, and Identity Properties of Addition and Multiplication. Homework-worksheet 2.1, #1-20.
