Wednesday, March 30

8th Grade trip permission slips are due TOMORROW!

Science: Completed notes from yesterday and worked on practicing calculating frequency and period. "What is Safe?" lab corrections must be turned in tomorrow!

Geometry: Went over 10.7 homework and worked on the practice test. Practice test is homework, chapter 10 test tomorrow!

Social Studies: Students discussed 13.2, read 13.3 and worked on 13.3 section assessment in class. Homework is to complete 13.3 section assessment. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Algebra: Took quiz today. Tomorrow we will continue with factoring! Have a great Spring Break!

Spanish 8 and Spanish I students. Check family access tonight to see if you owe me any assignments. Everything must be turned in by tomorrow, or it will affect your Term 3 grade. Tomorrow is your last day to retake any quiz or test for Term 3.

Technology: "Investigate" section of the Design Folder is due April 14th.  Project Packet attached

LA - We continued reading and finishing up "The New Kid" - and discussed the conflict, protagonist, setting and theme. We then started reading the short story "Lather and Nothing Else."  HW - none.

Tuesday, March 29

Science: Tests were returned and we took a daily science quiz. This week we begin Unit #5, Waves & Sound. Did an jigsaw notetaking activity. All "What is Safe?" project corrections must be turned in before break!

Geometry: Went over the 10.5 & 10.6 homework assignments and reviewed the 10.6 notes from Friday. 10.7 notes (equations of circles) were completed in class, 10.6 worksheet ODDS is homework. Chapter 10 test Thursday!

Pre-Algebra: We continued to work on scale. We finished lesson 6.6. Homework-worksheet 6.6, # 1 - 21, 25.

Spanish I students: If you were not in class yesterday because of March Miracles, you need to check my blog to see what exercises were assigned. You also need to come to me before this Thursday to turn in the exercises that were due. Spanish I students who were in class, if you did not turn in your exercises that were due, I am entering a 0 as your grade until the work is turned in.

Social Studies: Students shared paragraphs from 13.1, were introduced to 13.2 and began work on 13.2 guided reading in class. Homework is to complete 13.2 guided reading. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Algebra: Quiz on Wednesday, it covers sections 9.1 and 9.2 (adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials)

LA - Student's reviewed the short story read on Friday, "Bishop's Silver", by Victor Hugo. We went over the conflict, setting, protagonist and theme. We then starting reading "The New Kid", by Murray Heyert and will finish it up tomorrow. HW - no homework unless your child did not take their A.R. quiz on "The Outsiders." This quiz MUST be taken by 3/31 which is the end of the term.

FYI - Lois Lowry, author of "The Giver" and "Number the Stars" is promoting 2 new books she has written and will be at BHS this Friday April 1st from 530p-730p. If you need more information call the Book Beat in Oak Park.

Technology - Students entered their schedules for next year at the High School and then continued working on their Family Budget.  Investigate is due April 14th; completed spreadsheet, print evidence for all expenses and income, bibliography citing all sources of print evidence.  We will then have 1/4 of our Design Folder completed, the next step will be the "Plan" section that will be a rough draft and a short essay explaining the proposed final product.

Monday, March 28 (C-Day)

Science: Investigation 19-A Harmonic Motion. What is Safe project corrections due Wednesday, March 30.

Technology: Students were in and out of the class due to the March Miracles preliminaries.  The time in class was used to work on our "Investigate" which is due April 14th.  What students should have ready for checking is their "Investigate" section of the design folder; Spreadsheet complete and printed, Print evidence of where each line item on the Spreadsheet came from, and printed bibliography of each line item on the spreadsheet.

Spanish: All missing Spanish work must be turned in by this Thursday. Anyone who did not take their Spanish test last week must take it this E day.

Algebra: Quiz on adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials on Wednesday for all classes.

LA - Today was C day so I only met with 3rd hour today. We watched "The Outsider's" movie and discussed the differences and similarities between the novel and the movie. Extra credit to students dressed as a greaser or a soc/preppy. HW - none

Pre-Algebra: We took a quiz on lesson 5.1 - 5.5. We started working on scale drawings. No homework.

Social Studies: Students reviewed 13.1 and shared current events in class. No homework.

Mrs. Weiss, Middle School Counselor visited the 8th Grade Technology classrooms on Monday, March 21st to discuss scheduling for high school. This is a very important and exciting time for the current 8th graders. On Tuesday, March 29th - Mrs. Weiss will return to Technology and students will enter their high school course selections into the computer.


Students are required to complete the Scheduling Worksheet and get a parent/guardian signature on the completed form for Tuesday, March 29th. It is VERY important that parents/guardians sign off on the scheduling worksheet. A copy of the worksheet and course selection guide is available for download on the blog and on Mrs. Weiss' personal webpage. Mrs. Weiss will be available each day at lunch for questions regarding scheduling, prior to March 29th. Thursday, March 24 (A-Day)

Science: Did a gallery walk to check the review for tomorrow's test and What is Safe projects were returned. Test tomorrow! Project corrections due Wednesday, March 30.

Geometry: 10.1-10.4 Quiz & 10.5 notes in class. 10.5 worksheet is homework. Chapter 10 test Thursday, March 31.

Art 7/8: "round Robin Picasso" continued.



Advanced Art grade 8: Day 1 of new still life drawing. Students will continue monochromatic painting.

Social Studies: I apologize for the lack of postings as I have been out of the building for the last two days. Students corrected 12.3 guided notes, read 12.4 aloud and worked on 12.4 section assessment in class. 12.4 section assessment is due Friday. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

LA - Literary essays should be turned in at end of the day today or tomorrow. We started reading and discussing the short story "Bishop's Silver." At the end of the stories we read in class we will talk about theme, conflict, plot and literary elements. Eventually there will be a test on both the stories and the elements. HW - Finishing their papers and taking the A.R. quiz on The Outsiders which is due by 3/31.

Algebra: Discussed adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials. Introduced finding the greatest common factor of a polynomial and factoring. Homework - worksheet 9.1 (attached)

Wednesday, March 22 (F-Day)

Science: Played Eletricity Jeapordy and students worked on the review for the electricity test. Review is due tomorrow!  Unit 4 (Electricity) test on Friday, March 25.

Geometry: 10.4 Activity, 10.4 Notes (Using Inscribed Angles), and the odds of 10.4 worksheet were completed and discussed in class. 10.5 notes and 3 problems from the 10.4 worksheet are homework. 10.1-10.4 quiz tomorrow. Chapter 10 test Thursday, March 31.

LA - Today I only met with hours 2,4 and 6. We watched the movie The Outsiders. Students earned extra credit if they dressed as a soc (preppy) or a greaser. HW - working on their literary essay which is due either 3/24 or 3/25.

Spanish 8 test has been moved to this B day.

Tuesday, March 22 (E-Day)

Permission slips for the 8th grade trip are due on Thursday, March 31!

Science: Students finished presenting alarm circuits and worked on the test review. Review is due on Thursday (4th & 6th hour will have time tomorrow to work on the review). Electricity test is Friday, March 25.

Geometry: 10.3 Notes (chords in circles) in class, 10.3 worksheet is homework. 10.1-10.4 quiz on Thursday, March 24 & chapter 10 test Thursday March 31.

Pre-Algebra: We went over lesson 6.5, similar figures. Homework-worksheet 6.5, # 1-4,8-10.

Technology - Family Budget due date update!  Due to the limited time we have in class with High School Scheduling...the due date for the Investigate section (print evidence of the research done, spreadsheet, and bibliography) has been extended to the week of April 11th (after break).

LA - students typed their final drafts. The paper is due either Thurs. 3/24 or Fri 3/25.  Student's also took their A.R. novel quiz on The Outsiders. The last day to take the quiz is 3/31. HW - Hours 2,4,6 dress as a soc (preppy) or a greaser for extra credit as we will be watching the Outsiders movie tomorrow. :-) 3rd hour will be doing the same thing on 3/28

Monday, March 21 (D-Day)

Science: Presented alarm projects, there are so many wonderful and creative circuits! We will spend the remainder of the week reviewing for Friday's test on the electricity unit.

Geometry: 10.2 notes (circle measurements). 10.2 worksheet is homework. 10.1-10.4 quiz on Thursday, March 24. Chapter 4 test will be Thursday, March 31. If students will be absent on Thursday they should take the test before spring break!

Pre-Algebra: We did a review today. No homework.

Art 7/8: "Round Robin Picasso" continued.

Advanced Art: Students have completed collages. They had the choice of red, blue, green, or purple paint. They are now mixing tints and shades of their chosen color to create a "monochromatic" painting!
 
Technology: Mrs. Weiss joined us today to introduce the new scheduling system for the High School. Tonight is the parent meeting at the High School at 7:00 pm. Next "D" day (Tuesday, March 28th) we will be logging in to the Student system and scheduling your students for their entrance into Berkley High! The due date for the "Investigate" portion of the Family Budget Project was set for next week...with March Miracles and High School Scheduling the due date will now be the week we return from Break (April 11th-17th).

Algebra: Passed back Chapter 8 tests and discussed. Started chapter 9. Homework: finish problems from the notes

Social Studies: Students discussed 12.1 guided notes and worked on 12.2 section assessment in class. Homework is to complete 12.2 section assessment. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

LA - Students worked on their literary essay. The final draft is due either Thursday 3/24 or Friday 3/25. Please remember that students can dress up as a soc (preppy) or a greaser on Wed 3/23 (hours 2,4,6) to celebrate "The Outsiders." 3rd hour will watch the movie on 3/28 and they should dress up as well.
HW - working on their papers. A.R. quizzes can be taken from home on the Outsiders quiz or they can take it in school but it is due by 3/31.

Friday, March 18 (C-Day)

LA - I only met with 3rd hour today and they worked on their literary essays. We will be working and completing them this week. Due on 3/31 or 4/1. HW - working on papers.

Pre-Algebra: We finished lesson 6.4, (similar and congruent figures). Homework-worksheet 6.4, # 1 - 10. We also had a "march madness" speed tournament. Way to go Boris!!

Social Studies: Students checked a quiz, shared current events and discussed westward expansion in class. No homework. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Science: Watched Bill Nye "Static Electricity" and discussed fuses & circuit breakers. "What is Safe?" projects & paper due Monday, March 21. Unit 4-Electricity test on Friday, March 25.

Geometry: Took the chapter 9 Quest. 10.1 notes are homework. We are hoping to finish chapter 10 before spring break and having the test Thursday, March 31.

Spanish 8 students: Go to my blog to find the study guide, since some of you will not have class on B day this week, since it is a half day. Your chapter test is next week on E day (March 22nd).

Pre-Algebra: We went over solving proportions with a variable, (lesson 6.3). Homework-worksheet 6.3, # 2-20, 25, 27.

Social Studies: Students finished presenting projects and shared current events in class. No homework. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Algebra: 2nd and 4th hour took test. 5th hour reviewed, test on Friday. I have attached the 2 review packets (practice test and  review stations) we did in class.

LA - students worked on their literary analysis papers and some took their A.R. quiz on "The Outsiders." HW - Finishing their paper.

Tuesday, March 5 (F-Day)

Science: Completed notes using the Jigsaw method and did investigation 15-A (Static Electricity). What is Safe project & paper due Monday, March 21 (see yesterday's post for the rubric and project planner).

Geometry: Completed and went over the chapter 9 practice quest in class. Chapter 9 review sections 9.2, 9.3, 9.6 & 9.7 are homework. Chapter 9 Quest is tomorrow.

Social Studies: Students shared presentations and current events in class. No homework. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Algebra: 2nd and 4th hour - test tomorrow, 5th hour - test Friday. I have attached the review that we did in class today. Answers are there as well. Happy Studying!!

LA - Students worked on typing up their literary essay rough draft. They will be working on their papers for the rest of the week. Their novel "The Outsiders" should be completed. HW - working on their papers.

Monday, March 14 (E-Day)

Science: Worked on "What is Safe?" paper in class today. This is the last day that we will be working on the project in class, although students are encouraged to bring their circuits in if help is needed. Final projects and paper are due on Monday, March 21. Click for rubric and lab planner.

Geometry: 9.7 notes (dilations and compositions) completed in class. 9.7 worksheet is homework. Chapter 9 "Quest" on Wednesday, March 16.

LA - Students were supposed to be done with their rough drafts so they can peer edit today. We also went over Ch 9 and 10 in the "Outsiders." HW - Finish the "Outsiders" (hours 2,4,6 -3/15) (hour 3 - 3/16). Literary essays are due 3/17 or 3/18. Students will have access to computers to type in class all week. Don't forget that conferences are this week 3/16 in the evening and 3/17 afternoon and evening. I look forward to seeing you there.

Pre-Algebra: We went over lessons 6.1 on rates and ratios. Homework-worksheet 6.1, #1-9,12-23.

Social Studies: Students finished presentations in class today. No homework. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Art 7/8: Students continue coloring their "Round Robin Picasso."

Advanced Art grade 8: Day 5 of weekly still life drawing. Drawings will be checked today. Students will continue cutting chair drawings apart and begin their collage.

Algebra: We finished chapter 8!!! Our test will be on Wednesday (2nd and 4th hours) and Friday (5th hour) and it is covering a ton of material. I have attached the practice test they received in class. Students should be studying their notes and flashcards. I am available before school and at lunchtime for extra help.

Friday, March 11 (D-Day)

Science: Worked on preparation for circuit building. Students recieved supplies to get them started (light bulbs and lengths of wire) and we also practiced removing insulation from the wires. Students may choose to use a buzzer instead of a light, but it is NOT required! Students also got to look at examples of projects from past years and we went over the rubric. Students should begin building their circuits this weekend so that they have enough time to fix any problems they may have prior to the due date. They do not need to bring their circuits in on Monday.

Geometry: 9.6 Notes (Symmetry) in class and we investigated with pattern blocks (your students LOVED getting to play with pattern blocks). 9.6 worksheet is homework. Chapter 9 "Quest" on Wednesday, March 16.

LA - Students worked on mini lesson #9 - Writing a conclusion. Students then wrote conclusions to their literary essay. They then worked on their literary essay rough drafts which are due Monday 3/14. The rough draft does not have to be typed it just has to be completed for peer editing.  HW - Completing the rough drafts if they ran out of time in class. Read Ch 9 and 10 in "The Outsiders" which is due Monday for discussion.

Social Studies: Students shared projects and current events in class. No homework. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Algebra: Finished notes from 8.5 (exponential growth). Discussed section 8.6 (exponential decay. Homework: wkst 8.5 (18-20) and finish graphs from 8.6 notes. Upcoming Events: 2nd/4th hour chapter test Wednesday 3/16 5th hour chapter test Friday 3/18. Conferences 3/16 and 3/17. Have a great weekend!

Technology - Students handed in their signed EDPs, if they didn't please get them in Monday. We began our "Family Budget" project. The packet is attached. Students had their "Lottery of Life" and picked their City, Marital Status, and number of children from cups. Many were upset they had no girls, or were divorced, or didn't want to live in LA...it is always a very rowdy day in my room.  Due dates haven't been set yet as this is the first time I'm doing this project with the split schedule. I'm shooting for "Investigate" being due by March 31st (last day before break), this will be all research and print evidence of their research checked by me.

LA - Today was C day so I only met with one 8th grade class. Students were handed back their thesis statement. If they were good, they got started on their rough drafts, if the thesis statement needed revising they worked on it, and had to get it approved by me before starting their rough draft. The paper is a literary essay based on the short story that they chose to write on. Students also caught up on reading "The Outsiders." HW - none

Art 7/8: 5th hr. meets today only. Re-demo of colored pencil portion of "Round Robin Picasso" drawing. Students will continue coloring with colored pencil.



Advanced Art grade 8: Day 3 of weekly still life. Students will continue drawing the five chairs today.

Pre-Algebra: We reviewed for our test on chapter 5 tomorrow.  STUDY:)

Wednesday, March 9 (B-Day)

Science: Students worked on the research component of the "What is Safe" project. We also had mini-meetings to discuss students' plans for the project. Circuit building should begin as soon as possible! Click here for project planner and rubric.

Advanced Art grade 8: Students will begin the "Cubist Chair Collage Painting" today. They will be begin by drawing 5 different chairs in the classroom.

Social Studies: Students presented projects in class today. No homework. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

LA - Students went down to the media center to watch a short video on what will be available for the book fair next week. We came back to class and discussed Ch.5.6.7 in the "The Outsiders." HW - none - students will begin working on their rough drafts from the writer's workshop starting on Friday.

Tuesday, March 8 (A-Day)

Science: Began working on the "What is Safe" project. Students brainstormed ideas about alarm circuits, saw examples of past projects, and began planning their circuit. Tomorrow we will be working on research. Students will need to begin building their circuits this week. See time-line below:

Monday, March 7 (F-Day)

Science: Investigation 14-A (Series and Parallel Circuits).

Geometry: Took the chapter 8 test.

Social Studies: Students continued to work on projects in class today. In addition, students were able to share current events. Projects are due at the beginning of class on Wednesday.

Technology - Students completed the following on the EDP in Career Cruising: 1 - Answered all Matchmaker and Skills questions. 2 - Chose 2 careers from results and saved to EDP. 3 - Chose 2 Career Pathways and saved to EDP. 4 - Wrote Short Term Goals and Long Term Goals and saved to EDP. 5 - Printed Signature sheet (in EDP blue buttons on left of screen - Printer Friendly Version). Signature Sheet is due at next class - Friday March 11

LA - Students worked on thinking up with their own thesis statements regarding their short stories they have been reading while doing writer's workshop. They also need to be able to support their thesis statement with information from their stories. HW - making sure that they are up to and through Ch.6. There will be a short quiz on Chapters 1-6 Tuesday 3/8.

Art 7/8: 2nd and 4th hrs. are still completely the marker drawing for the Common Ground Mosaic Mural installation piece sponsored by S.N.A.P.

Advanced Art grade 8: Charcoal gesture drawings are completed and have been graded. This class did not meet today but will be completing Common Ground Mosaic Mural drawing tomorrow.

Algebra: Discussed scientific notation, homework p. 515 (3-48 multiples of 3)

Friday, March 4 (E-Day)

Many 8th graders have not yet turned in the 8th grade privelages letter. Students will not be able to participate in any 8th grade events until this letter has been submitted! Click here if you need another copy of the letter. Thank you!

Science: Finished simile posters & paragraphs. Series and Parallel worksheet is homework.

Geometry: Went over the practice test. Chapter 8 review, odds only, is homework. Chapter 8 test on Monday.

Social Studies: Students continued to work on projects in class. Projects are due Wednesday, March 9, 2011. Homework is to work on projects. Remember, paragraphs on relevance and IB traits are due Monday and Tuesday.

Pre-Algebra: We took notes on lesson 5.7. Homework-worksheet 5.7, #10 - 18.

Algebra: Discussed section 8.3 (negative exponents!). 2nd and 4th hours, Homework: p. 506 (28-42) evens. 5th hour, Homework: p. 506 (4-42 evens). Have a great weekend!

Thursday, March 3 (D-Day)

Science: Began working on similes for our electricity unit. We will continue tomorrow by making posters and writing paragraphs explaining our similes. No homework!

Geometry: Went over 8.6 notes & worksheet. Quizzes were also returned. Chapter 8 practice test is homework. 

LA - Students were introduced to the novel "The Outsiders".  Ch1 and 2 and due today and we will have a discussion in class regarding what is going on. We also did an activity were the students had to come up with titles for each chapter and tell why that would be a good title. The list was put on the board and students voted for the best title. For some reason S.E. Hinton does not put chapter titles in her books. We also discussed what types of people might be "outsiders" in our society and why. HW - Chapter 3 and 4 due Friday for discussion.
Pre-Algebra: We finished lesson 5.6.  We are solving 2-step equations with fractions. Homework-worksheet 5.6, #13-24.

Algebra: Take home quiz!! Due BEFORE 1st hour.  Points will be taken off for each class period it is late.

Social Studies: Students checked chapter 11 assessment, reviewed folders and were presented with a project that is going to be due in class on Wednesday, March 9, 2011. Homework is to think of a project topic, inquiry question and list of resources to be used for completing the project.

Algebra: We spent a second day on product properties of powers (8.1). Homework is from the book p. 492 (3-45 multiples of 3). We will have a Take home quiz on Thursday!

Spanish 8/Spanish I vocab quiz on Friday

LA - students started their unit on "The Outsiders" - We discussed the author S.E. Hinton and her background of why she wrote the book at only 19 years old! We also discussed what the class thought of when they saw the words The Outsiders on the board. I read Ch1 aloud to them and we talked about the exposition (protagonists, setting, conflict etc.) HW - none

Pre-Algebra: We finished taking notes on division of fractions.  Homework-worksheet 5.5, # 5 - 20, even.
