Thursday & Friday, October 28 & 29 (F-Day 1/2 Days)

Geometry: Parallel & perpendicular lines graphing calculator investigation & 3.5 notes (writing equations and graphing lines). 3.5 worksheet is homework. Chapter 3 test Friday, November 5.

Algebra:  Finishing up sections 3.4/3.5 and start a review, Chapter test on Tues/Wed. Study! Study! I will be available before school and during lunch for extra help!

Social Studies: Students shared current events and information about early presidents in class. No homework. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Science (4th & 6th Hour): Students took a multiple intelligence inventory to learn more about their learning style. They then created slogans that represented their learning style and were put into new groups based on their learning style.

Technology: Students reentered the Moodle world and Logged in to complete their Copyright Quiz (with the red check mark) and continued on to Module 0.  Here they reviewed the processes used in the online classroom environment and then submitted an assignment through the Moddle submission process.

Wednesday, October 27 (E Day)

Science: Investigation 2A:  The Law of Inertia in class (investigating how mass affects speed of a car on a track).

Geometry: 3.1-3.4 quiz in class. 3.5 notes are homework. Chapter 3 test will be on Friday, November 5.

Pre-Algebra: We took notes on lesson 2.6. Homework- worksheet 2.6, all.

Algebra - taking quizzes and starting section 3.5/3.6

Social Studies: Students were introduced to the French Indian War and American Revolution during class. No homework. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

LA - Students read an article and had to decide if they were for or against the situation. They then held a debate and had to come up with a credible argument to support their claim. We discussed how important facts are in persuasion and opinion usually does not matter. HW - read pgs 111-177 by 11/1

Tuesday, October 26 (A Day)

Science: Students took the unit 1 test. No homework, we will start unit 2 (Newton's Laws of Motion) tomorrow!

Geometry:  Went over the 3.3 homework and 3.4 notes (slopes of lines). 3.4 worksheet is homework, 3.1-3.4 quiz tomorrow. 

Algebra: 2nd and 4th hour Algebra - review worksheet assigned for the quiz tomorrow, 5th hour Algebra - quiz today...no homework
 
Pre-Algebra: We took notes on lesson 2.5. Homework- worksheet 2.5, odds only.  You must show your work.
 
LA - students turned in their poetry booklets. We discussed the novel "NBTT" - pg 82-110. Students read an article that they had to debate over, they had to choose a side and support their reasons with a valid argument or claim. (this is background preparation for the persuasive essay which will be introduced next week). HW - read pg 111-177 by Nov. 1
 
Art 7/8: Students will view a video about Pablo Picasso.
 
Advanced Art 8: Students will begin "Nonobjective Circular Designs." They have already cut 2" viewfinders and will select an image to draw from a magazine using the viewfinders.

Monday, October 25 (C-Day)

Science (1st & 5th Hour): Students took a multiple intelligence inventory to learn more about their learning style. They then created slogans that represented their learning style and were put into new groups based on their learning style. Reviewed for Unit 1 test. All Classes:  Lab corrections were due today. Unit 1 test tomorrow!

Algebra:  Review for upcoming quiz over sections 3.1-3.4/6.1-6.3. 5th hour - quiz on Tuesday, 2nd and 4th - quiz on Wednesday.

Social Studies: Students shared current events were introduced to several of our most famous presidents in class today. No homework. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Friday, October 22 (B Day)

Science: Continued reviewing for Tuesday's science test by making simile posters and practicing review questions. Lab corrections are due on Monday for ALL classes, students were shown an exemplar lab in class to help them know what they need to do for their lab corrections.

Geometry: Practiced constructions of parallel and perpendicular lines. Homework is 3.3 worksheet and additional construction practice. 3.1-3.4 quiz on Wednesday, October 27.

Pre-Algebra: We reviewed for our quiz on Monday. Homework-study.

Algebra homework: Problems on the back of the notes 3.4/6.3 (#5-12). Remember there could be a solution, no solution, or all real numbers solution! Quiz next week! (Tues. for 5th hour , Wed. for 2nd and 4th). Have a great weekend!

Social Studies: Students turned in homework folders and took a quiz in class. No homework! Current events due "C" and "F" days.

LA: Today in class - Students handed in their poetry notes and took their poetry quiz. We then continued to discuss "Nothing but the Truth." HW - students should be up to page 110 in their novels by 10/26. Poetry books are also due 10/26.

Thursday, October 21 (A Day)

Science: Labs were returned to students, corrections are due on Monday, October 25. Students are able to earn full credit back on their labs through corrections! We also did a gallery walk to check the review for the unit 1 test which is Tuesday, October 26.

Geometry: 3.2 notes (Parallel lines & Transversals). 3.2 worksheet is homework, 3.1-3.3 quiz on Wednesday, October 27.

Algebra: Homework for all Algebra courses is worksheet 3.3/6.3. Remember upcoming quiz! Ask your child to explain how to do this problem to you: 23 = -4m + 2 + m

Pre-Algebra: We worked on distributive property and combining like terms some more. Homework-students received a worksheet in class. # 10 - 30 evens only. Quiz on Monday.

Social Studies: Students had a quiz review in class today (see attached). Quiz and homework folders due tomorrow. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

LA: Students discussed "Nothing but the Truth" - up to pg.82. We reviewed the notes and poetry quiz for tomorrow.  H.W. read pgs. 83-110 due 10/26, study for quiz 10/21. Poetry project due Tuesday, October 26.

Art 7/8 grade : Assembly of "IB Cubes". Rubrics completed and turned in for grading.

Advanced Art grade 8: Completion of "Flower Puns." Rubrics completed and turned in for grading.

Algebra: 2nd and 4th hours p.372 (4-32 evens). 5th hour is worksheet 3.2/6.3. There will be a quiz over sections 3.1-3.4/6.1-6.3 next week. 10/27 for 2nd and 4th hours, 10/26 for 5th hour

Pre-Algebra: We finished discussing lesson 2.3, distributive property and like terms, homework-worksheet 2.3, 2-7 simplify, 8 * 16 all.

Science: Investigating Acceleration activity in class. We also started reviewing for the Unit 1 test. The review is due on Thursday, October 21. Complete sentences or problem solving boxes are required. The review is on page 24. Understanding Vocabulary (#7-13), Reviewing Concepts (#8, 10-15, 20, 21, 24 & 25) & Solving Problems (#3-5 & 8-10). The Unit 1 test is scheduled for Tuesday, October 26.

Geometry: Went over the chapter 2 practice test. Chapter 2 review (odds) is homework. Chapter 2 test is Monday, October 18.

Pre-Algebra: We practiced distributive property. We started notes on lesson 2.3. Homework-worksheet 2.3 # 2-7.

Social Studies:  Students discussed current events, checked 4.2 guided reading and were introduced to 4.3 in class.Homework is to complete 4.3 guided reading. Current events due "C" and "F" days. Quiz on Friday, October 22.

LA: Students went to the media center to take their accelerated reader quiz. Once they were done the media specialist showed a video on new books coming out that will be for sale at the book fair. Students also worked on their poetry project and read their novel Nothing but the Truth. HW - Read Nothing but the Truth up to page 39 for Monday. They should be working on their poetry assignments as well.

Art 7/8: Continue working on "IB Cubes". Today we will begin adding color! Advanced Art grade 8: Day #2 on new still life. Continue working on "Flower Puns".

Technology: Students should have finished their Internet Scavenger Hunt and turned it in with the Bibliography attached.  EXTRA CREDIT: Hand Sanitizer and Tissues are desperately needed to keep the kids (and me) healthy. I will accept up to a to a total of 5 "submissions" of Extra Credit supplies per marking period.

Thursday, October 14 (D-Day)

Science: Turned in "How Fast Am I?" labs and completed ACES survey. Unit 1 test Tuesday, October 26.

Pre-Algebra: Reviewed, no homework.

Social Studies: Students checked atlas work, reviewed 4.1 and began to work on 4.2 in class today. Homework is to complete 4.2 guided reading. Current events due "C" and "F" days. Quiz on Friday, October 22.

LA: Students were introduced to the poetry project which is to make a poetry booklet/portfolio and is due on 10/26. Attached is the assignment with the rubric. Please contact me if you have any questions. We also started on the novel Nothing but the Truth, by Avi. It is a realistic fiction book and will be used as their next accelerated reader book. It is also going to be used as a template for their persuasive writing assignment that will be introduced once we finish the book. HW - read through page 39 in Nothing but the Truth. Accelerated reader quiz tomorrow.

* Reading MEAP Day 2 in the morning. 5th & 6th hours only in the afternoon.

Science: 5th hour made similes to review science vocabulary. 6th hour did the notes and graphing activity (see Monday's post for details). ALL CLASSES: HOW FAST AM I? LAB DUE TOMORROW! Unit test will be on Tuesday, October 26.

Algebra 1 Hour 5: Discussed 6.2...Focus on switching the inequality when multiplying and dividing a negative! 6.3 Assignment: Pg 144 3-35 odd, 37-39 "Show ALL Steps"

Algebra 1: Discuss questions on 3.1/6.1 WS. Begin 6.2, Assignment: Pg 366 #s 3-33 odd, 36, 37

Monday, October 11 (C-Day)

Science (1st & 5th Hours): Class did a jigsaw to complete the notes on pages32, 33, 34, 46, 48 & 49 and also did an activity looking at graphs of speed using fairy tales (click here for a copy).

LA: Students learned Senyru, Tanka, Concrete and Acrostic poems. We practiced and discussed. Homework: write a Senyru, Tanka, Concrete and Acrostic poem. Make sure the A.R. novel is finished before 10/15...that is when they take their quiz.

Social Studies: Students watched CNN Student News, shared current events and began to explore the world of debate in class. No homework. Quiz on Friday. Quiz review Thursday.

Technology - Students worked on their Internet Scavenger Hunt, which is due on Thursday, October 14th.

Art 7/8: This week students will start an "IB Cube." It will include students name, brief autobiography, and 2 IB traits they already possess.



Advanced Art grade 8: Students continue working on "Flower Puns." This is a drawing completed in ebony pencil. Students are drawing their version of a selected flower.

Algebra 1 (Hours 2,4,5):  3.1 Practice WS #s 1-19, 21,22 & 6.1 Practice WS #s 1-21

Pre-Algebra: We continued to work on distributive property. Practice, practice, practice. Homework-worksheet 2.2, # 13-18.

Social Studies: Students reviewed 3.3 notes, discussed the "Big Ideas" of the "Three Worlds, European Powers and Colonial Regions" in preparation for the quiz next Wednesday and completed atlas work in class. No Homework. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

LA: Students shared their homework with the class. Students were introduced to more poems and poets. Lewis Carroll "Jabberwocky", Shel Silverstein "The Giving Tree", William Blake "Chimney Sweeper." I also read them a ballad written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney "Eleanor Rigby." No homework this weekend!

Thursday, October 7 (A Day)

Science: Worked on rough draft of "How Fast Am I?" lab for tomorrow's peer review. Homework is to be prepared for tomorrow's  peer review. Final draft of lab will be due Thursday, October 14.

Geometry: Took the 2.1-2.4 quiz, 2.5 notes are homework.

Algebra 1: (Hours 2, 4, 6) Test Chapter 1. No homework.

Pre-Algebra: We got started on lesson 2.2, the Distributive Property. We will spend many days on this. Homework-worksheet 2.2, 1-12. Show all of your work.

Social Studies: Students shared 3.2 guided reading and read 3.3 in class. Homework is to complete 3.3 guided notes. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

LA: We went over the homework in hours 2,4,6 which was writing a self-portrait poem and a limerick.  Hour 3 learned about self-portrait and limericks today. All classes were introduced to the onomatopoeia, alliteration, hyperbole and idiom. Homework: reading accelerated book, finishing their self-portrait, and limerick poems. (3rd hour only). Everyone: 3 lined onomatopoeia, 1 line alliteration, 1 hyperbole example and 1 idiom example.

Wednesday, October 6 (F Day)

Science (Hours 4 & 6): Collected data for "How Fast Am I?" Rough drafts for peer review for all classes on Friday. Quiz corrections due tomorrow (see yesterday's post).

Geometry: Truth tables & symbolic notation activity in class. 2.4 notes (Using postulates & theorems), 2.4 worksheet is homework. 2.1-2.4 quiz tomorrow.

Algebra 1: Hours 2 and 6: Worked on chapters 1/2 review. ALL CLASSES CH 1/2 TEST TOMORROW!

Social Studies: Students shared current events, discussed early colonization and took notes on a video of early exploration/colonization in class. 3.2 guided reading is due tomorrow.

Technology: Students completed their Moodle posting, this week they were to post a well worded quiz question to the "What's on your mind" Forum. This question is to be derived from the information viewed about Copyright. http://moodle.oakland.k12.mi.us/berkley/. Students began their Internet Scavenger Hunt. Students are to search on the internet for answers to the questions and then create a bibliography for their answers in Easybib.com. A copy of the worksheet is attached. This assignment is due on October 14th for Hours 1,3, &5. And October 18th for Hour 2.

LA: Students reviewed and shared their Cinquain's and Clerihews. We went over all of our poetry notes and homework to make sure that everyone is up to date. We read "Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred Lord Tennyson and discussed its theme. We also read 2 Robert Frost poems and discussed their meanings. Students were introduced to Self Portrait and Limerick poems. Homework: Write a self-portrait and limerick poem. Continue reading their accelerated reading books. The quiz will be on Friday Oct. 15th.

Tuesday, October 5 (E Day)

Science: Went to media center to work on research for "How Fast am I" lab. 4th & 6th hours will collect data tomorrow, rough drafts for peer review due Friday. Quizzes were returned, quiz corrections are due Thursday. Directions for quiz corrections:
1) Separate piece of paper
2) Copy entire question & correct answer (not just the letter)
3) Write at least 1 sentence explaining the correct answer (not what you did wrong!) or show work.

Geometry: 2.3 Notes (deductive reasoning & the laws of logic) in class, 2.3 worksheet is homework. 2.1-2.4 quiz on Thursday.

Pre-Algebra: We went over lesson 2.1. Homework is worksheet 2.1 #1-21 and 27.

Algebra 1: Hours 2, 4, Correct 2.5, Assign: 9.1 p. 557, 17-25 odd, 33, 35. Hour 5 Correct 9.1, Review Chapters1/2 . Chapter 1/2 test on Thursday, click for study guide.

LA: Students shared their Cinquain and Clerihew poems. I introduced Haiku, couplet, triplet and Animal in Me, poems.  Homework: Reading accelerated reading book. Write a Haiku, couplet, triplet and Animal in Me poem. (3rd hour is due on Thursday since I won't see them tomorrow).

Art 7/8: Students continue working on "Name in a Circle" design. Due Wed. and Thurs. this week.
Advanced Art Grade 8: Some students are still completing "Shattered Values" drawing. We will begin "Flower Pun" drawings this week. Students have started working on still life #3.

Monday, October 4 (D Day)

Science: Went over the Speed homework & took the unit 1 quiz. Worked on "How Fast am I?" lab. We will be working on this lab for the remainder of the week. Peer review will be Friday, October 8.

Geometry: 2.2 notes (conditional statements & logic). 2.2 worksheet is homework. 2.1-2.4 quiz on Thursday, October 7.

Algebra: Hours 2, and 4- 2.5 p.99, 5, 9, 13, 19, 23, 25, 29, 31, 33, 37, 41, 51, 53. Hour 5 -9.1 p. 557, 17-25 odd, 33, 35. All three classes will have their Ch1/2 test this Thursday.

Pre-Algebra: We took the Chapter 1 test.

Social Studies: Students completed journal writes and "Big Ideas" questions to start the day. Students also shared 2.3 paragraphs and read 3.1 in class. Homework is to complete 3.1 section assessment. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Pre-Algebra: We reviewed for our test on Monday.

LA - Students shared their "feeling poem." We read "The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred Lord Tennyson and discussed the meaning of it. We also read "What is success?" by Ralph Waldo Emerson and as well as some other poems by Eve Merriman and Sarah Holbrook. Homework - none (today was C day so I only met with one 8th grade class today.)

Tech: Students reviewed the importance of online etiquette and appropriate responses in forums. They then voted on the rules for our online classroom and viewed the responses. They then viewed an online video on copyright and reviewed a website created for students on copyright. Each student will post a quiz question on the "What's on your mind" forum for next class.
