Monday, January 31

Science: Took the Unit 3 Test. After the test students began working on the midterm review, which is due on Thursday. The midterm is Friday. IF there is a snow day on Wednesday the midterm will not change (Wednesday is an F-day). If school were canceled any other day this week then the midterm will be moved to next week.

Geometry: Went over the 7.2 (Converse of the pythagorean theorem) and 7.3 (Using Similair Right Triangles) notes. 7.2& 7.3 worksheets- odds only- are homework. 7.1-7.4 quiz on Wednesday.

Pre-Algebra: We reviewed for our test tomorrow on chapter 4.

Social Studies: Students checked 9.3 notes, were introduced to chapter 10, reviewed 10.1 and began to work on 10.1 section assessment in class. Homework is to complete 10.1 section assessment. Current events are due "C" and "F" days.

Art 7/8: 2nd hr continues the watercolor portion of their monoprint for "Let the Sun Shine In." 4th hr wraps up the colored pencil portion of "Let the Sun Shine In." A demo on glazing Picasso tiles today too. 5th hr continues tissue paper collage portion of "Let the Sun Shine In."


Advanced Art grade 8: Some students are still completing the white charcoal pencil drawings. We will begin figure drawing. Each student will have the opportunity to be a model. Students were asked to bring in 1-2 props!

Algebra- We went over the mid-term today in class (there was a C+/B- average). We continued with solving systems of equations. We will have a quiz on Friday that covers the 3 methods (7.1 to 7.3) of solving systems of equations (and story problems). Subsitition Practice Sheet, Graphing Practice Sheet, Elimination Practice Sheet.

LA - Today we reviewed for their science fiction quiz tomorrow. (25 questions: multiple choice, T/F and some fill in). I collected The Giver packet that was due today, it is worth a test grade. We discussed and went through the last part of The Giver saving the ending discussion for tomorrow.  HW - study for the sci-fi quiz. Please make sure that your child brings their project materials to class tomorrow. They will be working on it in class and I can proofread some of the paragraphs. The project is due on Feb 8th.

Friday, January 28

Science:  1st & 5th hours played Jeopardy to review for Monday's test. Students were given the the choice to spend the remainder of class reviewing for Monday's test or beginning the midterm review which we will be working on next week.

Technology-Moodle Module 1 Part 2-Students viewed Resources and Videos on Safety Online and How Much Information is Too Much. They recorded their findings on a resource sheet and submitted it through Moodle. A forum discussing the pitfalls of Myspace and Facebook and a "Web License Quiz" are due Monday January 31st.

Pre-Algebra: We went over homework and did more practice with negative exponents. Homework-Finish practice test. Some students finished already. Chapter 4 test on Tuesday.

LA - Today was C day so I only saw one 8th grade class (3rd hour). Student's decorated their writers notebook. We then read the short story "The Jacket" out loud and discussed certain parts where they had to try and place themselves in the story, what are they seeing, hearing etc. We then set up the notebook with the table of contents and the first practice mini lesson. Students are learning how to live in the world of the story and experience the story intensely. (Working on straying them away from being a "plot junkie" like me!) HW - finish "The Giver" and the packet, due 1/31. Students should also be working on their science fiction project.

Algebra: 5th hour- started section 7.3, Homework - worksheet 7.3 Have a great weekend!

Social Studies: Students shared current events, discussed Washington's presidency and debated Federalist and Democratic Republican ideals in class. Homework is to complete 9.3 guided notes.

Thursday, January 27 (B-Day)

Science: Went over the Unit 3 Test review as well as suggestions for studying. Some of the suggestions include: Making Flash Cards, Studying The Review, Go Over Old Homework (The Energy Packet), Go Over Notes and Study Unit 3 Quiz. Test is Monday, January 31. We will begin reviewing for the midterm next week. The midterm is Friday, February 4.

Geometry: Went over the 7.1 homework and spent a lot of time reviewing the quadratic equation (ask your students how EXCITED Mrs. Petersen is about this!). 7.2 notes are homework. 7.1-7.4 quiz on Wednesday, February 2.

Pre-Algebra: We finished notes on lesson 4.6. Homework-worksheet 4.6, #14-19 and 22-27. Chapter test on Tuesday.

Social Studies: Students checked 9.2 guided reading, were introduced to 9.3 and began work on 9.3 guided notes in class. 9.3 notes due Monday. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Algebra: Solving systems of equations. Yesterday we solved by graphing, today by substitution.  Homework: finish problems from notes and worksheet 7.2A (evens only). Mid-term grades should be posted on Family Access by tonight!

LA - Students were assigned to read 2 short science fictions stories "Rain, Rain, Go Away" and "The Father Thing." Students then had to discuss the scientific elements of each story. They had the rest of the hour to work on finish decorating their writer's notebook, finish up with "The Giver" novel, finish their Giver packet or start on their science fiction project. HW - Work on the Sci Fi project, read "The Giver", or their AR science fiction book,or the "Giver packet. Whoo!

Art 7/8: All classes are still completing their "Let the Sun Shine In" community art project. 2nd hr.- watercolor monoprints, 4th hr. - colored pencil, 5th hr.- tissue paper collage.

Advanced Art grade 8: Completing white charcoal drawings.....rubrics tomorrow.

Tuesday, January 25 (F-Day)

Geometry: Students took their midterm exam. Kitchen geometry project is due on Thursday, we will begin chapter 7 tomorrow.

Social Studies: Students shared current events and began a historical inquiry in class today. 9.1 section assessment due Wednesday. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Spanish 8 and Spanish I: vocabulary quiz this Thursday.

LA - Today was an F day so I only met with 2,4, and 6th hours. Students were handed their own composition book to use for our "writers workshop." They had time to decorate it in class and we went over how the workshop will be done in class.  "Teaching Point" today - To write a literary essay you must live in the world of the story. You must experience the story intensely. HW - working on finishing "The Giver" book and packet. Also start working on their community project due 2/8.

Monday, January 24

Science: Worked on the review for the unit 3 Test (see Friday's blog for a link to the review). We will work on the review for most of the week, it is due on Thursday. Roller Coaster Lab is due Wednesday, January 26. The unit 3 test is Monday, January 31 and the midterm is friday, January 4.

Geometry: Went over the cumulative test. There is no homework, just study for the midterm tomorrow! Kitchen geometry project is due on Thursday.

Pre-Algebra: We started notes on lesson 4.6. Homework-worksheet 4.6, # 1-13.

Social Studies: Students reviewed homework folders, checked chapter 8 quiz, discussed section 9.1 in text and began to work on 9.1 section assessment in class. 9.1 section assessment is due Wednesday. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

LA - Today we discussed more of the "Giver" and went through the packet together. I also introduced their Science Fiction project. It is due on Feb 8th and is worth 120 points. It is a big project. They will have a few days to work in class but the rest will be done at home. Attached is the assignment and the points for each portion of the project. If you have any questions at all please let me know. HW - finishing up "The Giver" book and packet, due on 1/31. Start on the project due 2/8.
Algebra- 2nd and 4th hours - final review day for the midterm. Students have 2 practice tests with answers from which to study! 5th hour - Exam!!

Friday, January 21 (D-Day, 1/2 Day)

Science: Worked on final drafts of Roller Coaster labs and Unit 3 Test review. Roller Coaster Lab is due on Wednesday, January 26, Unit 3 Test is Monday, January 31. Science midterm is Friday, February 4.

Geometry: Class does not meet today. Midterm is Tuesday, January 25, Kitchen geometry project is due Thursday, January 27.

LA - today I only met with 4th and 6th hours. We went over the first 2-3 pages in "The Giver" packet together. I then let them have the rest of the hour to work on the packet, and get ahead in their reading. The packet and book are both due on 1/31. Have a great weekend!

Social Studies: Students attended the geography bee and shared current events in class. No homework. Have a wonderful weekend.

Science: 1st hour worked on their final drafts of the Roller Coaster lab and then watched the Energy videos that were created by students. 5th hour peer reviewed the Roller Coaster lab and worked on their final drafts. Final drafts of labs are due on Wednesday, January 26 (see yesterday's post for a copy of the rubric). Unit 3 test (which we will begin reviewing for tomorrow) is Monday, January 31. The midterm is Friday, February 4.


Technology - students selected their ACES choices for second semester.  After we went over the Module 1 Part 2 chart on vocabulary on the Internet, the Web, and Web 2.0.  Students were given another opportunity to redo this assignment, this assignment will reflect on next marking period.  Grades currently in the system are the current grades for Second Marking Period.

LA - today is a C day so I only saw one 8th grade class (3rd hour). We read the science fiction short story "The Arena", and discussed the key elements, theme/message and the conflict of the story. We continued with the grammar on adjectives. HW - Reading the "Giver" and working on the packet. Both are due 1/31.

Pre-Algebra: We continued to work on lesson 4.5 (rules of exponents). We did a lot of practice. Homework-worksheet 4.5, # 23-28, 30-35.

Art 7/8: Only 5th hr.meets today. Plans will be continued for "Let the Sun Shine In" project. Demonstration on tissue paper collage technique.



Advanced Art grade 8: Day 5 on current weekly still life. Weekly still life will be checked today. Students are beginning to complete white charcoal drawings.

Algebra: We are on our 3rd day of review and the kids are doing such a great job! I have attached the review materials. All of the students have received the materials already. 2nd and 4th hour --- exam on Tuesday, January 25th. 5th hour --- exam on Monday, January 24th. Wednesday, January 19 (B-Day)

Science: Peer reviewed the Roller Coaster Lab, rubric is attached (5th hour peer reviews tomorrow, rough draft must be completed). Final draft of lab is due on Wednesday, January 26. Unit 3 test Monday, January 31 and the midterm is Friday, February 4.

Geometry: Went over #1-50 from the midterm review and completed the review packet from yesterday. Began working on the cumulative review. Homework is to complete the odds on the cumulative review. Students should also be working on completeing the formulas and postulates sheet that they can use on the test. Midterm is Tuesday, January 25.

Art 7/8: Students will continue plans for "Let the Sun Shine In" community art piece, while their clay pieces are drying. 2nd hr. will receive a demo on watercolor application onto transparency.



Advanced Art grade 8: Day 4 on daily still life drawing. Students will continue white charcoal pencil drawings. Pastel fruit bowls are displayed in the front showcase!!
 
LA - Students handed in their "Giver" worksheet homework. Worked more on the science fiction unit. HW - Working on "Giver" packet, which will be due on 1/31 and will count as a quiz grade. The novel should be completed by 1/31 as well.

Algebra: We reviewed Chapters 4,5,6 today. Students had a tough time with chapter 6. We discussed that they should spend more time on the chapters that gave them trouble. We will take a practice exam tomorrow!

Pre-Algebra: We started lesson 4.5. Homework-worksheet 4.5, #2 - 22, all.

Tuesday, January 18 (A-Day)

Science: Worked on the lab planner (rough draft) for the Roller Coaster lab. This sheet must be complete tomorrow for peer review (5th hour will peer review on Thursday). We will work on writing the final draft the remainder of this week. Final draft of lab is due Wednesday, January 26. The Unit 3 test is Monday, January 31. We will begin reviewing for the test next week. The science midterm is Friday, February 4. Students will be given review materials for the midterm on January 31, but a great way to review is to go over previous unit tests and quizzes (which students should have in their binders).

Geometry: Began reviewing for the midterm. Midterm review sheet up to #50 is due tomorrow. Geometry midterm is Tuesday, January 25. Kitchen Geometry Project is due Thursday, January 27.

Spanish: 8th graders spanish midterm is tomorrow.  Spanish I students have their midterm on Thursday.

LA - Student's continued with the science fiction unit.  HW: Continue reading "The Giver". Finish worksheet questions for tomorrow's discussion.

Algebra: We started reviewing for the Mid-term today.  2nd and 4th hour exam will be Tuesday, January 25, 5th hour exam will be Monday, January 24. Today's Focus - Chapters 1, 2, 3. Study Suggestions!
*set up a quiet, comfortable place at home (not too comfortable)
*study a little bit each day (review sheets, problems from the book, chapter tests at the end of each chapter)
*take frequent breaks (study for 30 minutes/take 10 minute break)

Pre-Algebra: We had a quiz on lessons 4.1 - 4.4. No homework.

Friday, January 14 (F-Day)

Science: 4th & 6th hours collected their roller coaster data and worked on their lab write-ups. Peer review is Wednesday, January 19 so students should be working on the methods section and have their data tables complete. We will work on graphs and the remaining sections on Tuesday next week. Lab is due January 26 and unit 3 test is January 31.

Geometry: Took the chapter 6 test and exchanged kitchen work triangle data. No homework, but students should be working on their projects!

Social Studies: Students shared current events and participated in a geography challenge in class. No homework.

Algebra: Took Chapter 5 test today. They are all under strict orders not to think about math until next Tuesday!!! Have a great long weekend!

Thursday, January 13 (E Day)

Science:  lab due date and test dates have changed! All classes worked on data collection for the roller coaster lab. 1st & 5th hours should have their methods sections and data tables complete for Monday. All classes will peer review on Tuesday, January 20/21. Lab is due Wednesday, January 26. Unit 3 test Monday, January 31  and the science midterm is Friday, January 4.

Geometry: Worked on the chapter 6 practice test. The chapter 6 test is tomorrow!

Social Studies: Students took chapter 8 quiz and discussed Dr. King's legacy in class today. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

LA - We recapped Chs 1-5 in "The Giver" and then discussed Chs 6-8.  H.W. Read Ch 9-12 in "The Giver" due on Tuesday 1/18. Just a heads up, their will be a science fiction quiz on Feb 1st and the review will be Jan 31st.

Algebra: 2nd and 4th hours - reviewed today, test tomorrow, study!!! 5th hour - test today, no homework!

Wednesday, January 12 (D-Day)

Science: 1st & 5th hours began working on their roller coasters for the Roller Coaster Lab. 4th & 6th hours finished taping their skits and went over the final notes for the unit. Peer review for the roller coaster lab is Tuesday, January 18 and the lab is due Thursday, January 20 (1st hour) and Friday, January 21 (4th, 5th & 6th hours). The unit 3 test is Wednesday, January 26. The science midterm is Tuesday, Februrary 1.

Geometry: 6.7 notes (similarity transformations), 6.7 worksheet is homework. The chapter 6 test is Friday and the geometry midterm and project will be during the week of January 24-28.

Social Studies: Students checked 8.3, checked and turned in homework folders, reviewed for a mini quiz and were introduced to chapter 9 in class. Homework is to study for the quiz.

LA - Students discussed Ch 1-5 in the "Giver." We went over and discussed opening questions for example: "What would a perfect world look like?" We also read the science fiction story "The Arena" and went over how it makes it science fiction. HW - Read Ch 6,7,8 in the "Giver" due Thursday. Please make sure your child is also reading their outside reading book, it should be a science fiction book. (please make sure it is an A.R. book).

Art 7/8: Clay tiles continued.



Advanced Art grade 8: White charcoal drawing continued.
 
Pre-Algebra: We went over lesson 4.4 homework. We started our quiz review. Quiz is Tuesday.

Tuesday, January 11 (C-Day)

Science: 1st & 5th hours did Investigation 10B (Energy Flow in a System). Quiz corrections are are tomorrow for all classes. Upcoming Important Dates: Jan. 20/21 Roller coaster lab due; Jan 26 Unit 3 Test; Feb. 1 Midterm Exam.

Pre-Algebra: We finished lesson 4.4. Homework-worksheet 4.4, #13 - 18, 22,24.

LA - Today is C day so I only met with one 8th grade class (3rd hour). Students read the science fiction story "Running Brook of Horrors" on their own and answered questions regarding the scientific elements of the story. We discussed the story once they were done. HW - To make sure they have read Chapters 1-5 in The Giver. Due Wednesday.

Social Studies: Students shared current events and participated in a geography challenge during class. 8.3 guided reading and homework folders due tomorrow. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Algebra: We "interpolated" today! Ask your son or daughter about it! Homework: worksheet 5.7

Monday, January 10 (B Day)

Science: 1st hour went over the last sections of notes, while the other classes taped their skits. All classes worked on quiz corrections, which are due Wednesday. We will begin our Roller Coaster Physics lab on Wednesday and will continue working on this for the remainder of the week and into next week. This lab will be due on Jan 20 for 1st hour and Jan 21 for 4th, 5th & 6th hours. The Unit 3 test is scheduled for Wednesday, January 26 and the midterm will be on Tuesday, February 1. These dates are posted in the classroom and students put them in their planners today as well.

Geometry: 6.6 notes (Use Proportionality Theorems) in class. 6.6 worksheet is homework. Chapter 6 test is Friday. The Kitchen Geometry Project and the Geometry Midterm will be during the week of January 24-27.

Art 7/8: Students will continue working on their Picasso tile. Most should finish today! Then we need to allow them drying time.

Advanced Art grade 8: Students will continue the "layout" of their white charcoal drawing onto the black paper. Most have chosen their subject matter.

Social Studies: Students discussed 8.2, read 8.3 and worked on 8.3 guided reading in class. Current events due "C" and "F" days. Homework folders due Wednesday. "Big Ideas" for chapter 8-Weakness of the Articles of Confederation, compromises needed to write the Constitution and Federalist verse Antifederalist arguments for ratification of the Constitution.

Algebra: Homework today was worksheet 5.6 (attached). I also handed out the review for chapter 5 (attached). It is not due until Thursday. 2nd and 4th hour will be testing on Friday (1/14), 5th hour will be testing on Thursday (1/13) This test will be the last grade on the report card. After this chapter we are starting our review for the mid-term exam. As always, I'm available before school and at lunch for extra help!

Pre-Algebra: We started notes on lesson 4.4, Homework-worksheet 4.4, # 1-14.

LA - students took their A.R. quiz on their biography books. They were also assigned to take out a science fiction book to read at home. (It must be an A.R. book).  HW - Reading the class novel "The Giver" 1-5 due on Wednesday 1/12

Friday, January 7 (A Day)

Science: Took the unit 3 quiz. No homework!

Geometry: 6.5 notes (proving similarity by SSS & SAS). 6.5 worksheet is homework. Chapter 6 test Friday, January 14.

Social Studies: Students discussed 8.1, read 8.2 aloud and began to work on 8.2 section assessment in class. 8.2 section assessment is due Monday. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

LA - Students read the story "Future Tense" and answered questions on how it relates to science fiction. We discussed the answers in class. I passed out their science fiction novel "The Giver" by Lois Lowery and they need to read the first 5 chapters for Monday. HW - read Ch. 1-5 in "The Giver"

Pre-Algebra: We went over homework and reviewed lessons 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3. No homework

Algebra: Discussed lesson 5.5 (more finding equations of lines - parallel and perpendicular). The homework is attached. Have a great weekend!

Thursday, January 6 (F-Day)

Science: 4th & 6th hours did Lab 10B (Energy & Efficiency). All classes have the Unit 3 Quiz tomorrow.

Geometry: Introduced the Kitchen Geometry Project and took notes on 6.3 & 6.4. Worksheet 6.3 & 6.4  (odds) are homework. Chapter 6 test is Friday, January 14.

Language Arts: Miss Klein is at a writing conference today. There is no homework.

Social Studies: Students shared current events and participated in a geography challenge in class. 8.1 guided notes due Friday. Current events due "C" and "F" days.

Art 7/8: Day 2 of clay! (Except for 5th hr.) Head shapes are cut and students have started to create the face!

Advanced Art grade 8 did not meet today.

Technology: Students moved on to the next section in Module 1, Part 2 - Cyber Communication and Collaboration. Then provided Examples and Benefits of Internet Use in School - this task is due next Wednesday, January 12th.


Algebra: Discussed section 5.4. Assigned 5.4B worksheet. Ask your son or daughter, "What is the difference between slope-intercept form and standard form?"

Algebra: We are having the best time finding the equations for lines. Ask your son or daughter, "What 2 things do you need in order to write an equation for a line?"  2nd/4th hour- homework p.296 (4-44 multiples of 4). 5th hour- worksheet 5.1/5.2

Pre-Algebra: We worked on reducing fractions with variables in them. Students did a great job. Homework-worksheet 4.3, # 18 - 23 and 3 problems from the notetaking guide.

LA - We finished presenting the cereal box projects. Everyone is doing an amazing job! HW - none

Algebra: 2nd and 4th hour:  Went over chapter 4 test. Grades are on Family Access.  Started section 5.1-homework is out of the book p.286 (2-38 evens) . Chapter Test scheduled for Friday 1/14, Midterm scheduled for Tuesday 1/25. 5th hour: Started section 5.2-homework p.296 (4-44 multiples of 4) and a slope worksheet.  Chapter Test scheduled for Thursday 1/13 , Midterm scheduled for Monday 1/24.
Pre-Algebra: We went over lesson 4.3. Homework-worksheet 4.3  # 1 - 15

Social Studies: Students reviewed 7.4 notes, were introduced to chapter 8 and watched a video (with notes) on the founding of a new nation. No homework. Current events due "C" and "F" days.
LA - students presented their cereal box projects. We did not get through all of them and will finish up tomorrow. So far the projects are amazing and the kids put in a lot of work!! :-) HW - finish their biography books if they did not complete it as of yet.
Technology:  Students were informed of any missing work on my books.  They then completed Module 1, Part 2 in their Moodle course.

Art 7/8: Demonstration today on Picasso inspired clay tiles. Students will get their clay tomorrow and begin!


Advanced Art grade 8: Pastel fruit bowls were turned in yesterday. Today students will pick their subject for their next drawing. They will be using white chalk pencil on black paper.

Monday, January 3 (C-Day)

Science: 1st & 5th hours did Investigation 3B - Conservation of Energy. All classes will have a quiz on unit 3 on Friday.

Social Studies: Students discussed CNN Student News, shared current events and participated in a geography challenge in class today. Homework is to complete 7.4 guided notes and current events if these assignments are not finished.

LA - Today was C day so I only met with one 8th grade class. Students were introduced to their Science Fiction unit. They read and took notes on the subject. Students also read silently the biography of Dolores Huerta and took and open book quiz. With time left we started working on adjectives at the beginning of sentences. (this was done on F day before the break so everyone is caught up). HW - To finish their cereal boxes. Many students turned them in early! I am very excited for their presentations tomorrow!
Algebra: Happy New Year!  5th hour - Started Unit 5. Homework tonight is from the book. pp. 286 (2-38 evens) This is our last unit before the midterm. Our midterm is scheduled for Monday 1/24.

Pre-Algebra: We reviewed lesson 4.1 and 4.2. Students will do some more practice for homework. Homework-worksheet 4.1, #3,8,10,14,21,22,25,27 and 4.2, # 6,9,13,15,21,23. Also, students got their chapter 3 tests back today. They are allowed to do test corrections. The corrections are due Thursday 1-6-11. No exceptions. Rules for corrections-
1. Separate sheet of paper.
2. Rewrite question.
3. Answer correctly.
4. Explain mistake.

Technology - Students submitted the Assignment from Moodle Module 1 - Part 1 (Due December 13, assigned November 29). Then we began Module 1 - Part 2. We are NOT completing the webquest in this section due to lack of time....Students were to review the note-taking skills section and then move on to the section headed "Using the Internet, The Web, and Web 2.0" The Task or Assignment for this section is due by the end of class tomorrow. FYI - we meet four more times before the marking period is over. Please check family access often to be sure your student is caught up. All Moodle related work can be done from home or library.
