Wednesday, October 1

Science:Today we continued investigating distance/time & speed/time graphs using the following websites: Position/Time GraphPosition Time Graph 2, and Position/Time & Velocity/Time. Homework is  Distance time graphs is homework. 

Geometry: Began reviewing for Friday's test, the review is homework.

RR English: Logs are due Monday. 5 days. Please follow the reader's response questions for full points. Use the back of the log or separate paper to answer your questions.

RR Math:
-Red group should finish any workbook pages not completed today in class, due tomorrow.
-Both groups, homework packet will be due on or BEFORE Monday 10-6-14.
-Both groups, your test will be Monday 10-6-14. Please study.

French 2: Passé composé quiz tomorrow. 9.2 and 9.3 vocab quiz on Monday. Unit 9 quiz on Tuesday. Unit 9 test on Thursday.

Pre-Algebra: Today we took notes over 1.6 and 1.7, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers. The homework is 1.6 Practice B every other odd and 1.7 Practice B every other odd (i.e. 1, 5, 9 etc). The Chapter 1 Test will be on Wednesday, October 8. French 2: Passé composé quiz this Thursday, using vocabulary from last year and this year and translating sentences (with a word bank)

ELA- Students finished publishing their narrative poems today. They then worked on Chapter 2 of our Grammar book - there are only 6 lessons in this chapter, all lessons are due at the end of class on Thursday, Quiz on Friday. We will be moving on to our Science Fiction Reader's Workshop next week. Homework: Journal #1.20, Read, get at least 2.1 & 2.2 done in packet.

Algebra: Whew! We were busy today! Our main focus in equation and inequality solving. Homework: 3.3/6.3 worksheet

Science: Students analyzed stories and various graphs, working together to pair up graphs of motion with a story that would logically go with the graph and then compared their matches with other groups and explained their reasoning as a class. This will help with our last part of the unit, graphs of motion, which we will begin next week.

Geometry: Continued our frustration with proofs (don't worry, this is normal at the beginning!) with the Proofs about Segments and Angles handout. Whatever wasn't finished in class is homework.

RR English: Reading logs are due Monday. All five days- follow what each response asks you to do so you can earn full points!

RR Math: Purple group, finish your workbook pages from today if you did not finish them in class- due Monday. All groups- please continue to work on your math packets and X facts!

Algebra:  We finished up our launch activity, handed in last night's homework, and we went over our first Chapter Test.  No homework.

Humanities: Students reviewed 1.3, and worked on 1.4, section assessment in class. Homework is to complete 1.4 section assessment (if students worked in class, they should have finished this already) and to complete a current event for Monday (they have known about this since this past Monday).

ELA - Writer's Workshop Day 8 - Students worked on their poems in Peer Response Groups. All read at least 4 poems and responded. We then worked on making sure all elements of narrative poetry was included in each poem. If you are not satisfied with your poem, re-write it over the weekend. We will be publishing and illustrating our poems. If you want your illustration to be printed, you must do it at home or find another way. We will only have access to a black and white printer. Hand illustrations are always accepted. Final draft form means not erasable and full of color. Homework: Have your poem ready to publish, READ! Have a Happy Rosh Hashanah!

Science: Took our first quiz today- no homework.

Geometry: Completed notes on proofs about segments and angles. Homework is to complete the second practice proof in our notes.


RR English: Read. Reading logs will be due Monday after the long weekend. All five days. Please make sure you are answering all five of the responses. Read the responses- many of you are not following what each response is asking you to do. You can use your general education ELA AR books for this assignment each week.

RR Math: Homework packets were passed out and you have some time to work on them. G red group- finish day 1 workbook pages for tomorrow if you did not finish them in class today.

Humanities: Students shared Peace Day writing assignments and began to work on 1.3 section assessment in class. Homework is to complete 1.3 section assessment. Current events are due Monday.

French 2: 9.2 vocab quiz Thursday Oct 2nd.

ELA (Kennedy) - Yesterday you looked at your Narrative Poems again - I was out sick, sorry :( Today we charted all of the narrative poetry elements and made sure our figurative language was used within. Tomorrow we will evaluate our own poems and three other poems, it is vital that all students have a narrative poem to be evaluated with them and in their journals.Next week we will be publishing and illustrating our poems. We will only have BLACK AND WHITE printing abilities so if you want to have your illustration be digital is must be printed at home. Otherwise we can print the poems here and you may hand illustrate it with crayons or markers. All poems will be final draft form (non erasable, NO PENCIL). Science: Discussed and analyzed the data from Friday's investigation. We also went over the speed homework and talked about how to study for tomorrow's quiz.

Geometry: Began discussing formal proofs using theorems about segments and angles. Homework is practice #1 in Proofs about Segments & Angles. The unit 1 test is Friday, October 3.


RR English: Reading logs should have been turned in today. If you forgot, you need to please get it in by tomorrow for late points. Your new reading log is being passed out today and will be due on Monday 9/29.

Science: Investigated calculating speed on of a car on and incline track at two points, before and after it bounced after the rubber band at the end. We will use this data to discuss energy of the system. Quiz has been moved to Tuesday, September 23.

Geometry: Took the constructions quiz. Homework is to complete the 1-6 Engage & Reflect section in their notes.

RR English: Reading logs due Monday- 5 different responses.


ELA (Kennedy) - Students began their Narrative Poem today with our Writer's Workshop Day 5. We discussed figurative language and how to place this in our poem. I also reminded them to keep an eye on their Narrative Elements chart and be sure to include all of the elements in their final poem. Many were far a long, but many still need to work this weekend. To be ready for Monday's class please be sure your student has at least one draft of their poem ready. Homework- One Narrative Poem ready for Monday's class - READ! Figurative Language Overview is attached.

Algebra: We checked the review. Test on Monday! I have attached my worked out answers for the review.

Science: Today we practiced converting units in the metric system using the Ladder Method & the mnemonic device "King Henry Died by Drinking Chocolate Milk". Geometry: Continued constructions by attempting patty paper constructions. Homework is to complete the constructions handout. Construction Quiz tomorrow!

ELA (Kennedy) - Students continued their Writer's Workshop Launching Unit with Day 4. We analyzed poems to be sure we could recognize the Elements of Narrative Poetry. Science: Students worked in teams to practice calculations involving speed, distance and time with problem solving boxes on dry erase boards. Homework is the speed worksheet. First quiz is Monday, September 22.

Geometry: Continued our practice of constructions with perpendicular lines (so much easier than parallel lines!). Homework is to finish the perpendicular line practice (#3-7).  Construction quiz on Friday.


RR Math: Students have a math test Friday- study! Math homework packets are due on OR before this Friday. Blue group- finish any workbook pages that you could not get done today-due tomorrow.

RR English: Your new reading log was passed out on Monday and will be due Monday 9.22.14. Read!!

Science: Today we took some of what we have experienced with the car moving down the track to discover the formulas involved in calculating speed (velocity), distance and time. Quiz on Monday, September 22.

Geometry: Practiced copying and bisecting angles before using what we knew about congruent angles to discover a construction for parallel lines. Homework is to complete the two practice parallel line constructions. Constructions quiz on Friday, quiz corrections are also due on Friday.

RR Math: Students have a math test Friday- study! Math homework packets are due on OR before this Friday. Blue group- finish any workbook pages that you could not get done today-due tomorrow.

RR English: Tomorrow is the LAST day I will accept late logs that were supposed to be turned in yesterday, Monday. Your new reading log was passed out yesterday and will be due Monday 9.22.14. Read!!

Humanities: Students were introduced to 1.1 in the text, and began to work on 1.1 section assessment in class. Homework is to complete 1.1 section assessment.

Pre-Algebra: Today we continued 1.3, writing and evaluating expressions from story problems. We took notes together in class. We got through the next two pages of notes. Science: Today students read on took notes on distance and time units. 

Geometry: Discussed angles and how to copy & bisect angles. We also investigated distance with more challenging problems & quizzes were returned. Students may do quiz corrections for partial credit- corrections must be on a separate sheet of paper and include explanation. Homework is the angles handout.

French 2: Quiz on the passé composé this Thursday. A practice one is on my blog.

Science: Today students investigated how variables affect systems through experiences with rolling cars down tracks with varying inclines. We noticed the importance of controlling variables in a system.

Science: Today students finished sharing their expertise on the scientific method from the notes they took yesterday.We then discussed writing great short answers, which a) give a complete answer; b) repeat key words from the question; c) are specific; and d) don't leave the reader guessing. Scientific Processes worksheet is homework- students must do this on a separate sheet of paper with great short answers.

Geometry: Student explored the concept of midpoint and derived the midpoint formula. Homework is to practice using the midpoint formula by completing the Midpoint Formula Practice in their note packet. Quiz tomorrow! 

Algebra: We took our quiz today. Remember the Problem Solving Workshop is due tomorrow!

Pre-Algebra: Today we started 1.2, working with and defining parts of exponential expressions. Science: Students had their first experience with reading and taking notes utilizing the jigsaw method; we will continue this process tomorrow. We also discussed good reading and note-taking strategies and will continue to improve on these skills throughout the school year.

Geometry: Completed the Pythagorean Theorem activity from yesterday, and then used the Pythagorean Theorem to discover the distance formula. Homework is the Pythagorean Theorem & Distance Formula practice (in their notes). Quiz on Friday!

Humanities: Students shared KWLs and discussed current event and class grading scales in preparation for Curriculum Night this evening. No homework. 

ELA (Kennedy) - Students reviewed last night's Grammar and we discussed any questions.  We then started Grammar 1.7-1.8  EVERYONE should be at least half-way through their first novel of the year.  I have brought the class to the Media Center, sent students down to check out new books, and offer a great classroom library.  Please check with your student and talk about the book they are currently reading, you might like it as well.  Remember our goal is a book every two weeks.  If students are reading for at least 30 minutes a night, they should be there by now! Hope to see all at Curriculum Night Tonight!

Science: Students used the data they collected Friday, and graphed on Monday, to calculate the average speed of the car on the track. We discussed multiple methods for calculating the average as well as how to analyze our average to see if it makes sense.

Geometry: Went over the Basic Terms handout homework, and began analyzing how/why the Pythagorean theorem works. We will continue working on this tomorrow.

Science: Analyzed & graphed the data that was collected on Friday. We talked about patterns in data and how to handle outliers (or wonky data).

ELA - Kennedy - Today we checked in Grammar 1.1-1.2 and then moved on to Grammar 1.3-1.4. During Day 2 of the Launching unit students discussed the Notice and Note Signposts and how to use them to better understand their independent reading. They were given bookmarks to use to help remind them of the signposts and what each means. Homework: finish Grammar 1.3-1.4, Read, gather decorations for composition books (Journals)

Algebra: Each class finished at a different point, so the homework is to finish the notes (and sample problems) for both 1.3 and 1.4. Our first quiz will be this Thursday covering sections 1.1-1.5

Science: Continued exploring how the photogates can be used to find speed data with a car on a track.

Geometry: Began our first unit with an introduction to basic terms and constructions.

LRC, RR ELA, RR Math: All signed course packets and parent contact form were due today.  If you did not turn yours in, please do so by Monday. I will also be checking to make sure everyone has their course supplies next week. 
RR ELA: Please select your first book that you will use for your reading log that you will receive on Monday.  It is OK to use the same book that you are using for your general education English class.

French 2: Map quiz on Monday

ELA- Kennedy - We spent a nice cool day in the Media Center! So lucky I booked it today for Summer Reading AR quiz taking and book check out. Homework: ALWAYS Read 30 minutes minimum a day.

Humanities: Students analyzed primary and secondary sources in class today. No homework.

Algebra: Did sections 1.1,1.2,2.7 notes. Homework: Worksheet 1-1 and 1-2 all are attached. Also attached are the worked out answers to the warm-up. Have a great weekend!

Science: Continued exploring how the photo-gates measure time.

Geometry: Continued exploring proofs using comic strips. Homework is to read about constructions & take notes

Humanities: Students reviewed the 5 W's of History, worked on a KWL and played a history "game" in which they tried to identify primary sources in class. No Homework

ELA- Students began their first Reader's Workshop with Day 1 o their Launching Unit.  We discussed how important it is to have evidence of how much we read and filled in our first book of the school year on our Reading Logs.  This is NOT our Summer Reading Requirement.  We will be going to the Media Center tomorrow to take any remaining quizzes for Summer Reading. Welcome back!

Science: Yesterday students took a pre-test on the main learning objectives and went over the course syllabus. Today we started using the timers and photogates which will allow us to make precise measurements of motion throughout the year.

Geometry: Yesterday students participated in an assessment of Van Hiele Levels and went over the course syllabus. Today we began discussing the logic of mathematics and proofs through comic strips. Attached is an article regarding Van Hiele Levels of Geometric Understanding. 

ELA- Kennedy:  Students were given the syllabus yesterday to be signed by the end of the week.  Today we conducted a performance assessment that will be our baseline for writing abilities.  We will be conducting Reading Assessments over the next few weeks to find the basis for reading instruction!  Welcome back!  Hope everyone's summer was fun!  Now back to work!

Homework: Decorate their ISN (composition notebooks) with 15-20 number stories about them.  Due tomorrow!


Chinese: Hi Everyone, Welcome back to the school. Today is our first class officially as we had assembly yesterday. Today, we went through the syllabus. Now, you know what you were expected to do in the class. I hope your will enjoy learning Chinese this year. Parents and students, please spend some time to read the syllabus at home, sign and return it back tomorrow in the class. Please make sure to get materials (binder, dividers, notebook, dry erase marker) this weekend. I would love you to have everything ready on Monday. See you all tomorrow.
