Stein - Intro to Coding - 4.28.17
What We Did Today:
Students read the Smithsonian article, "'Dream Big' shows that engineering is not just about math and science." Students annotated, answered questions and wrote a paragraph regarding the content of the article. The assignment is available at Newsela using students' Google Accounts.
Homework:
None.
Stein - Math 8 Plus - 4.28.17
What We Did Today:
Students completed 1.1 and 1.2 vocabulary in their notebooks. Words and definitions are found below. Students also started Problem 1.3, : Sliding Around: Translations." Students discovered properties of translational symmetry and used these generalizations to construct their own translation. Notes and vocabulary (definitions and audio reading of the definitions) are available athttp://norupstein.weebly.com/math-8-plus-blog.
Focus Question:
What does it mean to say that a figure has slide or translational symmetry? How is each point related to its image under transformation by translation?
Homework:
None.

Stein - Intro to Coding - 4.27.17
What We Did Today:
Students defined variables by giving them a name and assigning them a value or expression, used variables within Evaluation Blocks and described a situation where using variables as substitutions for values or expressions is more efficient. Students took Lesson 5 notes and completed Stage 5, which is available on Google Classroom.
Vocabulary:
- Define - Associate a descriptive name with a value.
- Immutable - the value can't be changed during the execution of a program. Think about it this way: saying x = 50, and then x = x + 1 might make sense in Javascript, but it's impossible in Algebra.
- Variable - A reference to a value or expression that can be used repeatedly throughout a program.
Stein - Math 8 Plus - 4.27.17
What We Did Today:
Students completed C and D from Problem 1.2 - In a Spin: Rotations. Students made generalizations regarding rotational symmetry. Students then practiced constructed their own rotational figures by completing ACE questions 8 – 10, 21 – 26 and 29. Notes are available at http://norupstein.weebly.com/math-8-plus-blog
Focus Question:
What does it mean to say that a figure has turn or rotation symmetry? How is each point related to its image under transformation by rotation?
Homework:
None.
Stein - Individuals & Societies - 4.27.17
What We Did Today:
Students reviewed causes of the Civil War and continued working on their Chapter 15 Assessment. Your assessment must include:
a minimum of ten events/people that you feel helped cause the Civil War
a date, or range of dates, for each event/person
an explanation (a few sentences) on how the event/person led to the war for each
must be in chronological order
Homework:
This assessment is due at the end of the hour tomorrow. Also, any work that needs to be completed for your IB Project should be worked on as well.

What We Did Today:
Students reviewed 15.3 and 15.4 and started a "Causes of the Civil War" time-line. The time-line needs to include at least ten causes of the Civil War. Each event needs to have an explanation of why it helped cause the Civil War.

Stein - Intro to Coding - 4.26.17
What We Did Today:
Students decomposed existing functions, wrote contracts that describe functions and experimented with basic geometric transformations. Students completed Stage 4, found on Google Classroom.
Vocabulary:
Rotate - To turn a shape around a center point.
Scale - To increase the dimensions of a shape by the same factor in all directions.
Translate - To move a shape from one location to another.
Stein - Math 8 Plus - 4.26.17
What We Did Today:
Students completed A and B from Problem 1.2 - In a Spin: Rotations. Students made generalizations regarding rotational symmetry. Students then constructed their own rotational figures using 120 degree and 90 degree rotations, choosing their own center point of rotation. Notes are available at http://norupstein.weebly.com/math-8-plus-blog
Focus Question:
What does it mean to say that a figure has turn or rotation symmetry? How is each point related to its image under transformation by rotation?
Homework:
None.

Stein - Math 8 Plus - 4.25.17
What We Did Today:
Students finished Problem 1.1, Butterfly Symmetry: Line Reflections. Students confirmed their conjectures of relationships between a line of reflection and the line segments drawn from an original vertex to their reflection vertex. Students used their generalizations to construct the reflection of a given figure. Notes and vocabulary discussed are available at http://norupstein.weebly.com/math-8-plus-blog
Focus Question:
What does it mean to say that a figure has flip or reflectional symmetry? How is each point related to its image under transformation by reflection in a line?
Stein - Intro to Coding - 4.25.17
What We Did Today:
Contracts provide a way for students to better understand and discuss functions. Through this lesson, students looked at known functions and wrote the contracts that describe those functions.
Vocabulary:
Contract - A statement of the name, domain, and range of a function.
Domain - The type of data that a function expects.
Range - The type of data that a function produces.
