Math 8 - Stone

Tuesday:

In investigation 3.2 we compared two tile companies. We needed to find with company had the better deal. Of course, it depended on the number of tiles we purchased.

We also learned that when solving equations, it is possible to get no solutions or an infinite number of solutions.

Homework: page 55 (8-17)

Wednesday:

In investigation 3.3 we learned that roots are another name for the solution or x-intercepts in a quadratic function. We also found out another name for them is the zero(s) of a quadratic function. We reviewed how to find the roots on a table, in a graph and in an equation. We then practiced finding the roots in equations by factoring.

Homework: page 55 (24-26)

Quiz corrections are due April 11 and make sure to make corrections to the Volume of Mixed Shapes homework worksheet to get full credit.

Math 8 - Stone

We worked on investigation 2.2 today. This investigation continued to stress the concept of equivalent expressions. We extended this idea to combining two expressions to get a single expression that would get us a faster result.

For example, we had an expression that calculated profit for an amusement park earned based on the number of visitors. We also had an expression that gave us the number of visitors based on the probability of rain. Our challenge was to find the profit based on the probability of rain. We could work through each expression separately or combine the two.

Focus Question:

How can you describe how points "move" under a reflection with coordinate rules in the form (x,y)→(   ,   ) when the reflection line is (1) the x-axis? (2) the y-axis? (3) the line y=x?

Monday:

Monday:

We went over the unit test. The overall average in all classes was a B+. That is awesome!

We summarized the four functions we have discussed this year (linear, exponential, inverse variation and quadratic). This will help prepare you for the midterm.

We will be reviewing all week, in addition to working on solving quadratics.

Tuesday:

In our warm up we reviewed finding a linear equation when given two points in preparation for the midterm.

We also worked on finding the solutions to quadratic equations with a calculator (in the table) and by using the zero product property in the equation.

Spanish 2

Students took notes on verbs like gustar.

Homework: Pg. 80

Gustar Verbs Quiz: Tuesday, March 14

Stein - Math 8 Plus - 3.7.17

What We Did Today:

Students completed Problem 2.2: Supporting the World: Congruent Triangles I. Students used measurement of sides and angles to decide if pairs of triangles were congruent. If the triangles were congruent, students needed to identify corresponding vertices as well as give a sequence of transformations that would make the figures overlap. Notes are available at http://norupstein.weebly.com/math-8-plus-blog

Focus Question:

How much information do you need to decide that two triangles are probably congruent or not congruent? How do you go about planning transformations that 'move' one triangle onto another?

Homework:

None.
