Friday, January 31

Science: Played jeopardy to review for the midterm. Homework is to complete the review we started yesterday, it is due on Monday. Midterm is Tuesday!

Geometry: Completed our investigation of the unit circle. Homework is to complete the unit circle handout.


Spanish II: Begin studying the 5.1 vocabulary words on pg 343

French I: 4.1 quiz on Monday, 4.1 worksheet due on Monday, midterm on Feb 10 & 11

Corrective Reading:  Logs are due on Monday- 5 responses.  Yes, you can use your novels from English class.

R. Room Math:  Test Monday- study.  Also, your homework packet is due Monday, including reflect questions!


ELA - Students continued their reading of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.  Many are really getting in to this classic novel! Today we looked at another Signpost during Reader's Workshop. Students should be able to recognize "Aha Moments" this signpost worksheet is due as an Exit Slip today. Homework: Read chapters 11-16


Tech (Kennedy) - Students finished their Excel Worksheet "12 Days of Middle School" and then practiced their touch typing skills.



Tech (Stein) What we did today: Students that turned in their permission slips were able to join their class and create an Edmodo account. Students also watched a video following two teens that use tobacco products and why they chose to quit. Homework: Edmodo permission slips were due Friday, January 31. Please have your student turn in a signed slip Monday if it has not yet been turned in. Have a great weekend and stay warm! :)

Course 3: Homework is worksheet 11.4, #4-12.

Humanities: Students checked 10.4, discussed current events and were given a study guide for chapters 9/10 test, which will be on Wednesday of next week. Homework is to begin to work on the study guide. Students will have a total of five days to work with the study guide and ask questions in preparation for the test Wednesday. The study guide is attached.

Pre-Algebra: Quick review and then a "Check Up" over 8.1-8.3. No HW.

Science: Began reviewing for the science midterm. The review is due on Monday, the midterm is on Tuesday. 

Geometry: Continued our study of the unit circle by using our knowledge of special right triangles (30-60-90 & 45-45-90) to identify coordinates on the unit circle that correspond with angle & radian measures.  Unit circle should be completely labeled for homework.

C. Reading:  Logs are STILL due with five completed days on Monday 2/3/14.

R. Room Math:  Homework packets will now be due on Monday 2/3/14.  Your test has also been moved to Monday 2/3/14.  This gives you a nice long weekend to study!  Please remember, if I have your homework packets early- by Friday, I will check it and return it to you so you can study from it with correct answers!

R. Room Math & C. Reading Recap:  Math dates have been changed- one day.  Corrective Reading dates remain the same.



Spanish (Tomlinson): 2.1 vocab quiz tomorrow. ALL WORK from Term 2 DUE TOMORROW

Chinese: We are going to do speaking practice on how to inquire about people. Students will also continue making correction on mid-term exam.

Spanish II: Continue studying for the second part of the midterm tomorrow. It will be all multiple choice. Both study worksheet packets are due tomorrow.

French I: The 4.1 worksheet passed out today is due Monday, Feb 3rd. Study for the vocab quiz on Monday, Feb 3rd


Humanities: Students checked 10.3 guided notes and began to work on 10.4 guided notes in class. Homework is to complete 10.4 guided notes. Please note that there will be a test on chapters 9 and 10 next Wednesday.  Students will get a review sheet tomorrow in class.


Health (Stein): What we did today: Students conducted a web scavenger hunt on the chemicals found in cigarettes, second hand smoke, celebrities with health problems due to smoking, how smoking affects a person's outward appearance and stroke. Homework: Edmodo permission slips were passed out and are due Friday, January 31.

Course 3: We worked on scatter plots today.  Homework is worksheet 11.2, all.


Pre-Algebra: Today we completed a sort of linear equations in which we matched linear equations to a descriptor, graph or table and provided proof of our matches. This page was completed in our ISN. HW: 8.2 (1-17 odd) We will have a short "Check Up" tomorrow over 8.1-8.3

ELA - We continued our reading of To Kill a Mockingbird;  starting with our Teaching Point (memory moment) and then discussing yesterday's chapters to check for understanding.  Today's signpost lesson will go in to their Novel Portfolio to be handed in at the end of the unit. Homework: Read Chapters 9-10, Journal entry #7


Technology - Kennedy - On Monday students took their first Typing Test to find a base line for their touch typing skills.  We then proceeded with TypingTest.com (each student has his/her own account) for skills development and practice. On Wednesday we continued with touch typing. Today students were introduced to/reminded about the Excel Spreadsheet environment.  We did a quick spreadsheet "The 12 Days of Middle School" and then created pie charts to reflect the cost of Middle School.  We will continue our spreadsheet studies tomorrow with taking our own surveys and charting them using Excel.

Science: Students re-created the roller coasters that they built on Monday and then compared the transfer of energy for their coaster to their classmates. No homework. We will begin reviewing for the midterm tomorrow. Midterm is on Tuesday, February 4.

Geometry: Began our unit on trigonometry by investigating the relationship between degrees and radians using the unit circle. Homework is to complete the review of special right triangles through Explore 1 & 2 in the trig packet.

C. Reading:  Logs are STILL due with five completed days on Monday 2/3/14.

R. Algebra - We are continuing our work solving systems of equations.  We discussed the method of substitution.  Homework attached

Spanish II: Spanish midterm is tomorrow and Friday.

Stein Health 8: Students took an alcohol and Tobacco Unit Pretest. Students read and discussed an article on tobacco basics. Edmodo permission slip were distributed and are due Friday, January 31.


Pre-Algebra: Today students learned how to use intercepts to graph a linear equation. HW: 8.3 Practice worksheet (1-15)

ELA- Attached is the entire Unit's Teaching Points.  Today we covered Day 1 and Day 2 as two separate journal entries. Homework: Read Chapters 6-8 and Journal entry #5

Science: Today students got to work on making roller coasters, tomorrow we will collect data with the coasters and on Wednesday we will use that data to analyze the energy flowing through the system. We will begin reviewing for the midterm on Thursday and will continue reviewing through next week Monday. The science midterm is on Tuesday, February 4.

Geometry: Went over the midterm. Tomorrow we will begin our next unit on trigonometry.

Spanish (Tomlinson): Continue working on reviews and classwork packets. MIDTERM--Tues and Wed (if school is closed on Tues--the test will be Wed and Thurs). 2.1 Vocab quiz-Friday

C. Reading:   Reading logs are due today.  If you forgot to turn yours in, you can turn yours in on the next school day for late credit.  Your new logs were passed out today, all five days need to be completed in full, even if we do not have school.  Take your books home!!  The new log will be due Monday 2/3/14.

R. Room Math: 
Math homework packets are due this Friday 1/31/14.  We will have a test Friday 1/31/14 unless we miss some school days.  I will re-assign the date if need be.  However, prepare and study for the test as if we will not miss school this week.  Also, if you turn your homework in early by Thursday I will check it and pass it back to you the same day so you can study from it.



Course 3: We finished our function project.  No homework.

Humanities: Students checked 10.1 section assessment and began to work on 10.2 guided notes in class. Homework is to complete 10.2 guided notes.


Spanish II: Student received two packets today to practice for the midterm on Thursday and Friday. Even if we have a snow day tomorrow, the midterm will not be moved, and students can work on the packets handed out. Answers will be on the blog. A third packet on Unit 4,3 (passed out last Thursday or today) is for extra credit. If we have two snow days in a row, then the midterm will be on Friday and Monday.
French I: Students had their chapter 3 test today. the next class we will begin chapter 4. The only homework is to start studying the purple words (first set) on pg  135


Pre-Algebra: Review of putting linear equations in slope-intercept form and how to graph them. HW: finish Graphing Linear Equations in Standard Form worksheet (it will be collected tomorrow)

Chinese: we worked on L7 Text 2's characters, and a few students were taking the mid-term exam in the meantime.

Science: Quests were returned and students had the hour to do corrections. 1st & 3rd hour corrections are due tomorrow, 5th-7th hour turned their corrections in at the end of class (tomorrow is a 1/2 day). Next week we will do some work with roller coasters and begin reviewing for the midterm which is Feb. 4.

Geometry: Took the midterm!

ELA- Today the last Publishing Day!  We will have the COW today for publishing our Op-Eds.  Classes will not meet tomorrow as it is a half day for the end of the marking period.  We will start reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee on Monday.  Homework: Read

Science: Students took the energy "quest" and then worked on "Forms of Energy". This is not homework! Tomorrow we will have a daily science quiz and will work on quest corrections. Midterm is February 4. Visit these sites for proper citation guidelines for either MLA or APA format 

Geometry: Finished going over the review for tomorrow's midterm. Students must report immediately at the beginning of lunch (11:00) for lunch, we will begin the midterm at 11:15 which will provide students with 90 minutes to complete the exam. 

C. Reading:  Logs are due Monday 1/27.  Five complete days.

R. Room  Math:  Packets are due Friday 1/31.  Study your multiplication facts daily.



Spanish II: Write an affirmative sentence or question with the new affirmative words, and then make it negative, using the new negative words learned today. This is due tomorrow and will be corrected for accuracy.

French I: Study your vocab for the 3.2 unit quiz tomorrow.

Course 3: I am at Oakland schools today. Students were given an assignment in class. No homework.

Science: Completed investigation 10-A which allowed students to practice calculating kinetic energy and efficiency. Tomorrow is the Energy "Quest"! Cross-curricular projects with language arts are due on Thursday. The science midterm is scheduled for Feb. 4.

Geometry: Went over the first 1/2 of the review. Homework is to finish the review. Midterm is Thursday, we will begin during lunch and continue into 4th hour

C. Reading:  Reading logs are due today.  If you forgot to turn it in, I need to see it tomorrow.  Your new reading log will get passed out today and it will be due Monday 1/27/14.  Read daily.  Also, if you did not turn your writing packet in last week, you have a zero in the grade book until I see it.

Pre-Algebra: Today we started a new unit on Functions. We discussed what a relation is and how to identify whether or not a relation is a function. HW: Relation and Function Practice worksheet (8-21) on a separate sheet of paper with all problems labeled please.

Science: Students investigated how kinetic energy transfers with the car on the flat track bouncing back and forth off of rubber bands. We then used this to determine the overall efficiency of the system. Homework is to complete the efficiency and work practice.  Energy "Quest" is Wednesday, January 22 and the cross curricular op-ed for language arts is due on Thursday, January 23. 

Geometry: Took the Dilation and Similarity "Quest". Homework is to start reviewing for the midterm. Review for Units 1 & 2 due Tuesday, midterm is Thursday. 

C. Reading:  Logs are due Tuesday.  Don't be late.  Five days need to be complete.

R. Room Math:  Study those multiplication facts (X).

Geometry: Proved the Pythagorean theorem using similar triangles. Homework is the similarity quest review. Dilation & Similarity "Quest" tomorrow!

Chinese: We are going to review and categorize characters, and make a flip book of characters as homework.

Science: Used the Law of Conservation of Energy and some awesome math skills to predict how fast the car should go based on it's mass and drop height. We then compared the predicted speeds with the actual speed of the car and discussed any discrepancies. Energy "Quest" Wednesday, January 22. 


Geometry: Used similarity to prove the triangle proportionality theorem. Homework is the 6.6 worksheet. Dilation & Similarity quest on Friday. 



Humanities: Students shared current events and were introduced to 9.2 of the text today in class. No homework.

C. Reading:  Logs are due Tuesday. Start getting organized for midterms if you have them.  Also- read, read, read...many of you need to take more AR quizzes.

Science: Completed the notes from yesterday and talked about potential & kinetic energy transforming as the car rolls down the track. We then practiced using the formulas for potential and kinetic energy. Homework is the potential and kinetic energy worksheet. Students must be careful to apply order of operations correctly when calculating kinetic energy! Energy "Quest" Wednesday, January 22.


Geometry: Took what we've learned about similarity and triangles and applied it to problem solving. Homework is the 5.5 practice. Dilation & similarity "Quest" on Friday, January 17.


Humanities: Students checked 9.1 section assessment and were introduced to 9.2 in class. Homework is to complete a current event for tomorrow.

C. Reading:  Reading logs are due one week from today.  Next Tuesday.  All sections need to be filled out.  You may read the same book you are reading for ELA AR quizzes.  Many of you need to take more AR quizzes.

R. Science: Today we read and took notes on energy, work, potential energy, kinetic energy and the law of conservation of energy. No homework. We will have a "Quest" on this unit Wednesday, January 22 and the midterm will be on Tuesday, February 4. 

Geometry: Investigated similarity and triangles. Homework is 5.4 practice. Quest on dilations and similarity on Friday and the midterm is Thursday, January 23.

Algebra - We are continuing our review for the midterm which is this Thursday and Friday.  I have attached 2 of the reviews (Algebra 1-6 Practice & Practice Exam 2) that were given out in class.

C. Reading:  Reading logs will be passed out today.  They are due Tuesday 1/21/14.  They need to be completed in full.

ELA - Students continued with their Argument Writing with Writer's Workshop Op-Ed Day 4, we discussed the validity of their argument and tested each other's arguments. Homework: READ (remember 5 AR books are due by next Thursday) Journal # 46

Humanities: Students discussed the citizenship handbook in class. Homework is to complete 9.1 section assessment.

Spanish II: study verbs and vocab for the midterm coming up, and begin to study the 4.3 vocab words for a quiz in a few weeks.

French I: Begin studying for the unit quiz on 3.1. This will be given on Wednesday.


Pre-Algebra: Today we finished up our exploration of Rotations and began working on a packet that reviews all of the transformations we have learned (translations, reflections, dialations, rotations). The review also covers more complex problems that involve multiple transformations (i.e: first rotate the original 90 degrees clockwise and then reflect the image using the x-axis). Tomorrow and Wednesday we will continue reviewing. We will have an Transformational Geometry test on Thursday (1/16). HW: Complete pp. 1-3 in Review packet (#s 1-6)

Course 3: Today we started review for our test on Thursday.  Chapter 6 review is due tomorrow.  Students had time to work on it in class.

Science: Completed investigating the relationship between height and speed by graphing the data collected yesterday.

Geometry: Investigated similarity in relation to dilations. Homework is the 5-3 practice. We will have a "quest" on dilations/similarity Friday, January 17 and the midterm is Thursday, January 23.

C.Reading:  There will not be a reading log until Monday.  However, you still need to read every night.  Many students need to take AR quizzes.

R.Room Math:  Homework packet and X fact sheet was passed out yesterday.  It will be due a week from today, Friday the 17th.  If you turn your homework in early, I will check it so you can use your homework to study for the test Friday the 17th. Enjoy your weekend.



Humanities: Students finished presenting projects and worked on Citizens Handbook worksheets in class. Homework is to finish the Citizens Handbook worksheets for Monday.

Chinese: We are continuing review Unit 2, and then take the unit test.

ELA - Students finished Day 2 (started yesterday) and continued their Op-Ed Writer's Workshop with Day 3 (Basic Op-Ed & Reverse Outline) .  

Course 3: Today we worked on lesson 6.4  Homework is worksheet 6.4, all.  Formulas that will be helpful are:

Thursday, January 9

Science: Today we continued our unit on Energy with an investigation of how energy transforms from potential to kinetic by dropping a car from different heights on the track. Tomorrow I will be checking in with students to verify that they have their 4 articles for our cross-curricular research project with language arts.

Geometry: Reviewed the dilation work we began before break. 5.1 and 5.2 practice is homework. We will have a "quest" for this unit instead of both a quiz and a test to make up some of our lost time. The Quest will be on Friday, January 17. After this unit we will begin preparing for the midterm, which is Thursday, January 23.

Chinese: We reviewed Unit 2 by doing workbook exercises.

Course 3: We did a review of lessons 6.1 - 6.3.  Homework is a worksheet on lesson 6.3. It is 8 questions.

Spanish II: 4.2 worksheet is due tomorrow. 4.2 flash cards are due on Monday. 4.2 vocab quiz on Monday.
French I: 3.1 worksheet is due tomorrow. 3.1 flash cards are due on Monday. 3.1 vocab quiz is on Monday.

Corrective Reading:  There will be no long this short week, but please read every night!

R.R. Math:  Homework packet will be passed out today and it needs to be completed and turned in by Friday 1-17-14.  If you turn it in early, I will check it and return it back before the assessment next Friday 1-17-14.

Spanish (Tomlison): 1.3 Test---Wednesday 1/15 (rescheduled). HW-Repaso (1.3) pp 90-91 # 1-2 due Friday; 3-5 due Monday. If not finished, your presence will be required at HW Club on Monday to complete.

ELA- Students caught up (slightly) from the extended vacation.  We began our Op-Ed Writer's Workshop with Day 1 (finding the differences between fact and opinion) and starting Day 2 (what is an Op-Ed and the differences between and Editorial and an Op-Ed).  All sessions

Creative Writing: Today in Creative Writing we began writing a story/poem about a picture using several adjectives to make the story as descriptive as possible. Homework: Type your story. We will continue with our nonfiction writing tomorrow.
