Friday, October 30

Science: Watched a science video. 5th hour & 1/2 of 4th hour got their labs back. Re-do's for these students are due Tuesday, November 3. Remainder of labs will be returned Monday.

Geometry: Practiced constructions of parallel & perpendicular lines. Students were given more practice problems for homework. Chapter 3 test is Wednesday, November 4.

Algebra: Went over review in class. Ch. 3.1-3.4 and 6.1-6.4 Test on Monday.

Algebra 2: Finished discussion about complex numbers. Students had time finish homework 4.6 in class. If they did not finish 4.6 in class, then it is homework.

Course 3: Baker- Went over 2.8 coordinate plane homework problems. Students finished the rest of 2.8 in class. Ch. 2 Test on Thursday, Nov. 5th. Austin- We finished taking notes on coordinate graphing. Homework-Worksheet 2.8 #1-15,18-20. Chapter 2 test on Wednesday.

Pre Algebra: Went over 2.7 in class and students spent the rest of the time working in groups doing the chapter review. Ch. 2 Test on Thursday Nov. 5th

LA - We finished reading and discussing Harriet Tubman. They have a quiz on Tuesday.
I assigned them their discussion groups for this unit. Journal #4 - List 25 frightening words and use them in a tale of horror. Mock Elections. HW: finish up journals.

Journalism - We don't meet today!

Humanities: -Students continued their investigation into the French Indian War by reviewing notes from section 5.3 and working on a guided reading worksheet for 5.3. If the guided reading was not completed in class, it is homework.

Science: Took the unit 1 test. 7th hour & 1/2 of 5th hour got their labs back today and their re-do's are due Monday, November 2.

Geometry: Went over 3.6 notes in class, 3.6 worksheet is homework. Chapter 3 test is Wednesday, November 4.

Algebra: Test moved until Monday, Nov. 2nd. Homework: Ch. 3 Review 3.1-3.4 Pg. 192-194 #7-37 odds, Pg. 197 1-17 odds, Ch. 6 Review 6.1-6.4 Pg.415-417 #5-23 odds, Pg. 419 #1-19 odds and 32. Show all work, you may use a calculator. It is homework if you do not finish in class.

Algebra 2: 4.6 homework as assigned on assignment log. Remember to refer back to notes on complex numbers while doing your homework.

Course 3: Baker-Took notes on the coordinate plane. Homework is 2.8 on assignment sheet. Students have Ch. 2 Test on Thursday, Nov. 5th. Austin- We started notes on lesson 2.8. No homework

Pre Algebra: Students took notes on numbers with decimal operations. Homework is 2.7 assigned on Assignment log. Ch. 2 Test on Thursday, Nov. 5th.

LA - Journal #3 Write about a time when you were new at something and felt a bit nervous about doing it. Why? Finished Jackie Robinson discussion. Started reading about Harriet Tubman. Returned and reviewed poetry quizzes. No homework - unless they did not finish their daily journals.

Journalism - Continue with news leads. My class, discussed news leads that were in the Oakland Press. HW: none.

Humanities: Worked on note taking skills in studying the French Indian War. If students did not finish the notes on section 5.3, they are to finish it at home.

Science: Today we went over the chapter review in class. Test is tomorrow!

Geometry: Took the 3.1-3.4 quiz. 3.6 notes for homework. Chapter 3 test will be Wednesday, November 4.

Algebra: We reviewed compound inequailities and prepared for the Ch. 3/6 test on Friday.

Algebra 2: Reviewed our Ch. 4 Test Part I and then started 4.5 Solving Quadratic Equations by finding square roots.

Course 3: (Baker) Today we had a partner quiz on Distributive property. Ch. 2 test is scheduled for next week Thursday. (Austin) We finished taking notes on the distributive property. Homework-worksheet 2.7 #1-12 all, 13-27 odds.

Pre Algebra: Today we started 2.7 in class. Ch. 2 test is scheduled for next week Thursday.

Humanities: Shared current events and worked on notes for 5.3. No homework.

Spanish 1: Chapter 2 test is tomorrow. I am asking the kids to prepare for the test using a new study technique in addition to what they usually do.

Spanish 8: Start to memorize your lines from conversations from the video transcript.

LA: Journal #2: If you could replace an actor/actress in any movie and play the part yourself what movie would you choose? What part would you play? Why? Biography Unit - what is a biography,autobiography, memoir, journal, diary. Read and discussed Jackie Robinson biography excerpt. HW: finish journal

Journalism: Studying and working on more news leads. HW: write a good news lead.

8th Gr Car Tech is presenting their Family Budget Projects and will end next Thursday.

Science: Today we played a jeopardy review game in class. Unit 1 review is due tomorrow. The directions for this assignment can be found on yesterday's blog post. We will go over the review in class tomorrow. Unit 1 test is Thursday.

Geometry: 3.5 notes (equations of lines and graphing lines). 3.5 worksheet is homework. 3.1-3.4 quiz tomorrow. Chapter 3 test Wednesday, November 5.

Algebra: Students will complete 6.4 today and work on the homework involving compound inequalities. Students must pay attention to the difference between AND or OR problems.

Pre Algebra: We reviewed one step equations with addition and subtraction. Students then completed one step equations with multiplication and division (2.6/2.7). Students have 2.6 homework to do today.

Course 3: We continued the conversation on distributive property and students completed the rest of the homework assignment in class. No homework.

Algebra 2: No homework, took Ch. 4 Part I test today.

Language Arts: Students took the poetry quiz. New journals: #1 - Write a description of your personality from a good friends point of view. HW: none

Science: Today we started working on review for the unit 1 test. The review is due on Wednesday, test is Thursday. Review must have complete sentences or problem solving boxes.

-Pg. 24-26: Vocabulary (#7-13), Reviewing Concepts (#8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 20, 21, 22, 24, & 25), Solving Problems (#4-11 & 13).

Geometry: 3.4 Notes (slopes of parallel & perpendicular lines). 3.4 worksheet is homework, 3.1-3.4 quiz on Wednesday.

Algebra: Today we started solving compound inequalities by doing an activity in class. Students worked in groups and presented to class. No homework for tonight.

Algebra 2: Chapter 4 test tomorrow 4.1-4.4 and 5.4. Today we reviewed in class by playing a review game.

Course 3: Today we learned distributive property by doing an exploration activity with area. Students are required to do 2.7 homework.

Pre Algebra: Today we learned about one step equations. Students were required to complete exit pass and had a lot of time to complete homework in class.

Language Arts: Students handed in their poetry booklets and recited their poems from memory. These are both project grades. HW: study for the poetry quiz which is Tuesday.

Journalism: Today we learned about how to write a good news lead. HW: none]

Humanities: Mr. L hopes to be back tomorrow. 5.2 section assessment due Tuesday. Current event due Wednesday.

* Tomorrow is the last day of MEAP. 8th graders will take the science MEAP.
* It is a 1/2 day tomorrow and there is no school on Friday.
* Conferences Wednesday evening, Thursday afternoon & evening.

Science: Today student's did a peer review with the rough drafts of their "How Fast Am I?" labs. Final drafts are due on Monday. Unit 1 Test is Thursday, October 29. Study guides for the test were passed out today and we will begin reviewing on Monday.

Geometry: 3.3 notes in class (proving lines parallel), 3.3 worksheet is homework. 3.1-3.4 quiz on Wednesday, October. 28.

Algebra: We went over solving equations and inequalities with variables on both sides. Students explored the differences and similarities between equations and inequalities by graphing their answers on a number line. Ch. 3.4 is homework for students as listed on their assignment log.

Algebra 2: Students reviewed for the chapter 4 test on Tuesday, Oct. 27th. It is very important that students know how to write, solve and graph polynomials in standard form, intercept form, and vertex form. Students must also be familiar with the rules for factoring quadratics and polynomials with degrees greater than 2. Students have to do the even problems in the extra practice section for homework (study 4.1,4.2,4.3,4.4, 5.4 and 4.10)

Pre Algebra: We reviewed Ch. 2 section 4 and went over all homework and grades. Students must review distributive property. All missing work is due on tomorrow at the end of the half day.

Course 3: Students must turn in 2.1-2.5 take home quiz. Today we are going to explore number properties to evaluate expressions. Students were given a sheet with all properties listed on it for their ease and to refer back to during homework. Also, it is very important for students to practice problems on www.classzone.com. Please refer to my website on www.berkleyschools.org for more information. Students have 2.6 homework.

LA - We correct the grammar homework (fragments/run-on sentences) and I collected it.
We reviewed for the poetry quiz on Tuesday Oct. 27th. HW: studying for the quiz on Tuesday. Finishing their booklet which is due Monday 10/26 and memorizing their poems also due 10/26.

Journalism - Students gathered background information on Al Taubman and came up with interview questions regarding their findings. This will be used when he comes in to speak to our class.

Humanities: No homework, enjoy the long weekend!

Spanish 1: Please do the U1E2 review sheet for Monday. We will have the vocab test on Tuesday and the chapter exam on Thursday of next week.

Spanish 8: We took a diagnostic test today based on the text. On Monday we'll start to work in smaller groups based on the results. There is no homework over the weekend.

Students took the Math MEAP today and had a speed schedule in the afternoon.

Science: "How Fast Am I?" rough draft. Peer review is tomorrow, final lab write up due Monday, October 26. Unit 1 test is Thursday, October 29.

Geometry: 3.2 notes in class. 3.2 worksheet is homework.

Algebra: Today in class we went over 6.2 solving inequalities. For more information about solving inequalities and a practice game to play please refer to http://www.math-play.com/Inequality-Game.html.

Pre Algebra: Passed back Quiz 2.1-2.3. Students who received a grade below 80% are required to get a parent signature due tomorrow with their quiz corrections. All students must do quiz corrections on a separate sheet of paper and turn it in tomorrow, Oct. 21st.

Algebra 2: We reviewed factoring polynomials and continued our discussion on quadratic equations. We have our first Ch. 4 Test on Oct. 27th covering 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 5.4 and 4.10.

Course 3: Today we corrected homework on dividing integers. Students took an in class quiz on 2.1-2.5. No homework for tonight.

Language Arts: Worked on the grammar packet = run-ons/fragment sentences. Students also had time to work on their poetry books and recitations. HW: grammar packet is due tomorrow and they should be working on their projects.

Journalism: Students took at quiz on writing and technology. HW: none.

Humanities: 5.1 section assessment due Wednesday. Current event due Wednesday.

Course 3: WWDT - Made foldable study guide to help students remember rules for dividing, multiplying, adding and subtracting integers. 2.5 Notes and homework. Quiz on Wednesday.

Humanities: Chapter 4 quiz was taken in class today. Students should finish reading chapter 5.1 for tomorrow.

Language Arts: I handed back their daily journals. We continued with our poetry unit reading aloud and analyzing the components. HW: Students should be working on their poetry list as well as memorizing their poem.

Journalism - Students worked on editing an audio interview by using the "acid" editing technology on the computers. HW: none.

Spanish 1: Please do the homework about accents for tomorrow and prepare to describe either Student A or B ftom ¿QuĂ© llevan? for Wednesday.

Spanish 8: Please review the vocabulary from pp 21, 51 and 77 for a diagnostic test on Wednesday. We're going to break into smaller groups next week.

Science: Today we worked on making the graphs (distance/time & speed/time) and writing the data analysis section of the "How Fast Am I?" lab. We will be working on the conclusions & reflection section on Monday. Students must be prepared with a rough draft for peer review on Wednesday. The final lab will be due Monday, October 26.

Geometry: Great job on the chapter 2 test, 96% average! 3.1 notes are homework.

Algebra: Went over the similarities and differences between equations and inequalities. Students need to finish 6.1 Homework for Monday.

Pre Algebra: Went over simplifying expressions using a graphing calculator. Students completed activity on Pg. 83. No homework.

Algebra 2: Finished 5.4 factoring polynomials. Students have 5.4 homework.

Course 3: Students did a multiplying integers activity and then we took notes. Students have 2.4 homework.

Humanities: Chapter 4 quiz on Monday.

Language Arts: Recitation poetry project was introduced. It is due on 10/26, students spent the hour looking up a poem they would like to memorize and recite to the class. The rest of the hour was used to work on their poetry books. Reading counts quiz is due today. After 4pm it is a zero. HW: working on poetry books and memorizing a poem.

Journalism - Worked on editing an audio interview on the computers. HW: none.

Spanish 1: There is no written homework for Monday, but for Tuesday, please list the words from our vocabulary list (p. 69) that have written accents and tell whether the accent is there for pronunciation reasons or to change the meaning.

Spanish 8: We have just finished a small unit about explorers and will pick up on straight Spanish language. Happy weekend...no homework!

Science: Today we collected data for the "How Fast Am I?" lab. We will work on graphing and writing the rough draft the rest of the week as well as next week. Peer review of rough drafts is Wednesday, October 21 and the final draft of the lab is due Monday, October 26.

Geometry: Went over the practice test. Chapter review odds are "homework". Students can work on this after MEAP tomorrow, so they do not have to finish it at home tonight. Chapter 2 test Friday.

Algebra: 3.3 Homework

Algebra 2: Went over factoring with a coefficient of "a" greater than 1.

Pre Algebra: Went over combining like terms. No homework

Course 3: No homework

LA - We worked on Cinquains, and Formula poems. HW: working on their poetry booklets which are due 10/26 Monday. IMPORTANT** - reading counts quizzes must be taken on or before the end of the day Friday 10/16! If students fail to accomplish this task it is a quiz grade of zero. Students had close to 5 weeks to read their books and take the quiz on their own.

Journalism - Students read an article in the Washington Post and discussed the contents of the article. Mr. LaFramboise class learned about technology. NO HW.

Spanish 1: Please finish the workbook exercises from the photocopies of pages 22-24. Page 22#14 and 23#16 and 17 for tomorrow and 24#19, 20, 21 for Friday. The chapter test will be about a week after the MEAP finishes, so keep working on vocabulary!

Spanish 8: The kids are turning in illustrations and speaking lines from a text about the explorers of the New World. I handed out a study guide for a test on Friday. They can use the answers from the study guide for the test, so they need to fill out the questions as completely as possible.

Science: Be ready with to collect data for "How Fast Am I?" tomorrow. Students should have methods prepared. We will work on this lab this week and next week, peer review will be Wed. Oct. 21, Final lab will be due Mon. Oct. 26. Unit 1 test will be Thurs. Oct. 29.

Geometry: Went over homework and did practice test. Chapter 2 test is Friday.

Humanities: Current events and folders due Wednesday. Colonies graph due Wednesday if it was not finished in class today.

MEAP starts tomorrow! Be sure to come to school on time & well rested. MEAP muffins will be sold in the front hall.

Science:
Mrs. Petersen was out today. Classes watched Bill Nye Measurement video and did a worksheet on interpreting graphs. If the worksheet was not completed in class it is homework.

Geometry:
2.7 notes in class, 2.7 worksheet is homework. Chapter 2 test on Friday.

LA - Returned their Subj/pred. quizzes and reviewed them. Went over Experience, Animal in me, self portrait, inside poems. HW: daily journals are due Tuesday 10/13 - 20 entries = 100 points.

Journalism: Skyped with Mr. LaFramboise class. We discussed technology.


Spanish 1: Please write a description of a classmate using the 1-2 vocabulary but not mentioning the name of the person. Tomorrow you will add a description of his/her clothing.

Spanish 8: The sentences and illustrations about explorers are due tomorrow!

LA - #20 journal - Is it important for you to go to college? Why? I introduced the poetry project which is due on 10/26. The daily journals are due 10/13 (20 entries). We went over how to write Alliteration poems. HW: daily journals, continue reading their reading counts books, the quiz should be taken on or before 10/16.

Humanities: We have worked for the past several days on the following assignments, all are due Monday.

LA - #19 - Write 1. Limerick, 1. Quiet and 1. Onomatopoeia poem. Students took the subject/predicate quiz and turned in the grammar packet that went along with it for a homework grade. Students worked on a sensory poem in the "Making Sense" book. HW - none - just make sure they are up to date on their daily journals and are finishing up their reading counts books. Last day to take the quiz is Oct 16th.

Journalism: Students learned technology skills. We Skyped with Mr. Laframboise class. HW - none.

Spanish 1: There is an oral quiz over the answers to the quesitons about pp 52-53 on Wednesday. To prepare, please rewrite the answers in a visually interesting fashion (using color, shapes, etc.). This is due Monday.

Spanish 8: Please do the translations of the first six sentences about the Spanish explorers using the sheet entitled "La edad de exploraciĂłn." Some of you might be memorizing some of these sentences, while others just need to recognize the words and information.

Oct. 7

Science: Today we collected and graphed distance/time & speed/time data from a car on a downhill track. This practice will help students when they begin working with their own data for "How fast am I?". We will begin collecting data for "How fast am I?"next week Wednesday. Students must be prepared with anything they need to bring in for this lab.

Geometry: 2.5 Notes (Proofs using algebra). 2.5 worksheet is homework. 2.1-2.4 quiz tomorrow. The chapter 2 test is currently scheduled for Friday, October 16.

Journalism - No class today.

Humanities: Current event due Wednesday.

Oct. 5

Science: Today we practiced calculating acceleration based on the car traveling on a level section of the track compared to a sloped section of the track. Students qot their quizzes back, quiz corrections are due tomorrow for 1/2 credit. Rules for quiz corrections are:
1. Separate sheet of paper
2. Copy the entire question
3. Write the correct answer completely (not just "a")
4. Write at least 2 sentences explaining the question and answer. Statements such as "I didn't know" or "I got confused" do not explain the science. If it is a solving question students may make a problem sovling box instead of writing sentences.


Geometry: Did the 2.3 notes in class (Law of Detachment & Law of Syllogism). 2.3 worksheet is homework. 2.1-2.4 quiz on Thursday.

Algebra: 2.5 Day1

Pre Algebra: no hw unless you have test corrections and need a parent signature.

Course 3: Review for Ch. 1 Test tomorrow

Algebra 2: Chapter 2 Test tomorrow

Humanitites: Current event due Wednesday.

LA - Journal #16 - write 2 feeling poems. Students took a grammar quiz on structure and kinds of sentences. I collected the grammar packet for a homework grade.
Students learned how to write "quiet" poems. HW: Write a quiet poem. Student should also have the subj/predicate packets up to 1.10 finished for Tuesday. REMINDER: today is the last day to make-up reading counts quizzes. Reading counts number #2 should be taken on or before 10/16.

Journalism - Students worked on finding out the verdict of the P-Diddy trial and reporting it in their own words. Students also wrote a rap about the trial. HW: finishing up their class assignments.

Spanish 1: Please draw, color and label (on a saparate sheet) a person using p. 69 vocabulary.

Spanish 8: Please prepare for the geography quiz tomorrow.

LA - Journal 15 - If your parents created a report card to grade you at home, what topics would they grade? Would you be an "A" student? why or why not? I collected their homework..."Feeling" poem. Reminded students that Monday is the last day to take their make-up quizzes for the 1st Reading Counts for a better grade. Grammar - Subjects and Predicates. HW: Study for the sentence "kind and structure" quiz. Subject and Predicate packet is due on Tuesday Oct 6th.

Journalism: Discussed the homework - Their opinion on how the media reports on different races. Students came up with questions they would ask either the Jury, judge, witnesses etc. to get more information on the P-Diddy case. We discussed the questions in class. HW - none.

Spanish 1: There is no written homework over the weekend, but please start reviewing the p. 69 vocabulary for our quiz next Thursday, October 8. There will also be a test retake on Wednesday at lunch for those who want to raise their grade from the chapter 1 test.

Spanish 8: There is no written homework over the weekend, but please make sure that you're caught up on homework. Some kids are falling behind and it will hurt your grade, especially when there aren't many assignments!

Oct. 1

Science: Today we read and took notes on acceleration using the "jigsaw" method. We also went over the speed homework. Quiz tomorrow (open note).

Geometry: Students got the chapter 1 test results today, class average was 91%, nice job! Went over 2.1 notes in class, 2.1 worksheet is homework.

Algebra: 2.4 Homework

Pre Algebra: Ch. 1 Test tomorrow and stamp sheet due (for 90 points!)

Course 3: Test postponed and moved to Tuesday.

Algebra 2: 2.7 Homework, Test on Tuesday.

Humanities: Quiz on Friday, October 2nd.

LA- Journal #14 - Write a paragraph that uses as many words that rhyme with "sneeze" (minimum 7 words and paragraph must make sense.) We corrected and discussed the grammar homework. There is a grammar quiz on Monday 10/5 and homework will be collected then. We started on "Feeling" poems and did some examples on the board as a class. HW: write your own "Feeling" poem.

Journalism: We discussed the HW from yesterday. Their opinion on the P-Diddy trial.
We then continued with the P-Diddy trial discussion regarding fairness, media influences, sensationalism etc. HW: 1 page discussing their opinion if they think the media reports news differently depending upon the race of the person involved. If so how and why? Must pull examples from the article to support their opinion. Due tomorrow.
