Science: Went over Investigation 4-A and the Work/Mechanical Advantage homework from last week. Quest is tomorrow!

Geometry: Went over notes for 7.3 (similar right triangles and geometric mean). 7.3 worksheet is homework. Quiz for chapter 7 is on Thursday and Kitchen Geometry Project is due on Friday.

Spanish I: Study for the midterm tomorrow and Thursday. Study the oral questions for Monday, January 28th.

Humanities: Students were introduced to chapter 8 and began to work on 8.1 guided questions in class. Homework is to complete 8.1 guided questions.

ELA - Literary Analysis papers were handed back and we had a discussion as to the need to come in at lunch for any individual help needed.  Many students did not follow the lessons taught in Writer's Workshop, did not follow the rubric, and did not come in to get help during lunch.  The average grade for the class was very low in my eyes. We reviewed the Grammar Packet from Friday and will move on with our grammar study tomorrow.  Remember Journals are due tomorrow, no ifs ands or buts.  This should have been done during Writer's Workshop and every night during the marking period, it should be an easy "A". Homework: Journal entry #56

Pre-Algebra: Homework: Practice 5.6B (multiples of 5)

 

Algebra: Study for Midterm!  Test starts tomorrow.

Friday, January 18

Geometry: We spent a good chunk of classtime reviewing ways to solve quadratics (graphing, factoring, completing the square and quadratic formula) and 7.2 homework. Quadratics are back in full swing for much of the remainder of the year! Students had the remainder of the time to work on their Kitchen Work Triangle Projects, which are due on Friday, January 25. We will have a quiz on chapter 7 Thursday, January 24.

Science: Completed Investigation 4-A (work and simple machines) by comparing the amount of force needed to lift a weight using different combinations of pulleys and how that affected the distance of rope used. No homework, Unit 3 "Quest" Wednesday, January 23. A "Quest" is a combination of a quiz and a test: Open note, corrections for partial credit, entered as a test grade.

Humanities: Students completed our chapter 7 quiz, finished a video on the American Revolution, discussed the importance of Dr. King, and shared current events in class. No homework. Have a great weekend.

Spanish I: Study for the midterm on Wednesday and Thursday next week. The vocab packet and study guide packet are due on Tuesday.

Course 3: We started to work on if a relation is a function or not.  Homework is worksheet 11.1, #6-9. 5th hour-Students should complete the function machine if they did not turn it in.  Make sure you include:  Domain, input, x, range, output, y, an equation and function.

Thursday, January 17

Science: Began investigation 4-A, analyzing the force needed to lift a block as a result of the # pulleys being used. 

Geometry: Went over the 7.1 homework and took notes on 7.2 (converse of the Pythagorean theorem). Homework is the 7.2 worksheet and tomorrow is a project work day. The kitchen geometry project is due on Friday, January 25. 

Course 3: Today we read the story, The Sneetches, by Dr. Suess.  Students had to make a function machine using key math terms on their drawing.  If it is not done, it is homework. 5th hour-  We started our unit on Linear equations today.  It is the basic foundation for algebra.  Homework is worksheet 11.1, #1-5, 10-13.

Spanish I: Study for the midterm next week. The vocabulary worksheet and study guide worksheet are due next Wednesday.

Humanities: Students checked chapter 7 assessment, turned in homework folders, reviewed for our quiz and watched a video on the American Revolution in class. Homework is to study for our quiz.  The questions are below.

- Why did the colonists win the war? (give two reasons).

- What was the cost of victory? (give two examples).

- Was it worth it? why? (give two reasons).

 To do well on the quiz, students should review pp. 196-197 of the text. Note from Mrs. Petersen, try to use a mnemonic device to help you remember! 

ELA - Students checked Grammar 1.8 Complements: Subject Complements and 1.9 Complements: Objects of Verbs and began 1.10: Fragments and Run-Ons.  If they finished I instructed them to turn in their 1.10....HOWEVER I will not be here tomorrow - another Reader's Workshop clinic, so I instructed students to hold on to any work completed tomorrow.  I will collect today's and tomorrow's work on Tuesday.  Students should not turn work in to a sub regardless, but I made it clear to all classes that substitutes are not usually in the building for a teacher to ask about missing work, so always hold on to work until your usual teacher is back (unless it is a long term absence).

Tomorrow students will begin Chapter 2 of the Grammar book.  I have left Lessons 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 for students to complete by Tuesday. Have a great Weekend, remember Tuesday is the last day to take AR quizzes.

Pre-Algebra: Problem Solving Workshop is due tomorrow.  It is worth a quiz grade!!!

Wednesday, January 16

Mrs. Petersen & Mrs. Graham are at a math conference at Oakland Schools today.

Science: Read and took notes on pages 91-95 (simple machines and mechanical advantage). Homework is the Work/Mechanical Advantage worksheet, which must be completed on a separate sheet of paper with great short answers (#1 a-e) or problem solving boxes (#2-8).

Geometry: Took notes on section 7.1 (Pythagorean theorem), homework is the 7.1 worksheet. Friday will be a project work day for the Kitchen Geometry Project, which is now due on Friday, January 25.

Humanities: Students reviewed 7.4 and worked on chapter 7 assessment in class. Chapter 7 assessment and homework folders due tomorrow. Current events due Friday.

Spanish: Write the practice essay for the midterm next week. Due tomorrow.

Attached is the entire first chapter of the grammar book.  Monday's assignment was lessons 1.5-1.7, yesterday's assignment was 1.8, today's assignment is 1.9, and tomorrow's will be 1.10. I'm sorry for the large file but do not have easy access to a scanner to separate the lessons. Homework - finish Grammar 1.9, Journal entry #54, READ!

Tuesday, January 15

Geometry: Completed an activity to investigate what Pythagorean Theorem MEANS. Homework is to begin working on the kitchen scale drawing. Final project due date has been changed to Friday, January 25 (1/2 day, we will have breakfast along with project presentations). 

Science: Completed Investigation 3-B and went over the Potential & Kinetic Energy Homework Assignment.

Spanish I: Work on the practice worksheets for the midterm.

Course 3: Today we took the chapter 6 test.  5th hour reviewed.  Their test is tomorrow.

Pre-Algebra: Dividing fractions.  Homework:  5.5B (evens). Quiz corrections are due on Wednesday and Problem Solving packet is due on Friday.

Algebra: Chapter 5 test today.  No official homework, but I did offer an extra credit opportunity which is due next week Thursday.

Humanities: Students checked 7.4 section assessment and reviewed 7.2 and 7.3 in class today.Homework is to complete chapter 7 assessment by Thursday.

ELA - students handed in their packets from yesterday and moved on to Subject Complements (Chapter 1 Lesson 8).  I am working on scanning all of the lessons so they can be posted online, due to the heavy grading load of the Literary Essay and the out of class responsibilities, I have been unable to complete this task.  Please be patient.  If your student is absent have them pick up a packet from the "slots" inside my door.  Sorry for the inconvenience and lack of digital resources :) Homework - finish Grammar 1.8, Journal entry #53, READ! DEADLINES - Tuesday, Jan 22 - Last day to take AR Quizzes,Wednesday, Jan 23 - Journal turn in for 2nd card marking a minimum of 56 entries.

Monday, January 14

Geometry: Discussed the Kitchen Work Triangle project in detail and looked over examples from previous years for inspiration. The final project is due on Tuesday, January 22. 

Science: Shared graphing results from Investigation 3-B and then predicted how fast the car should have gone based on the Law of Conservation of Energy. Students then compared their actual speeds with the predicted speeds and discussed any possible reasons they might not have been the same. 

Spanish I: Study for the midterm next week on Wed, Jan 23rd and Thurs Jan 24th.

Humanities: Students checked 7.3 guided reading, discussed Student News and shared current events in class. Homework is to complete 7.4 section assessment.

Geometry: Took the midterm!

Science: Completed the graphs from investigation 3B and any notes not completed yesterday. We then practiced calculating potential and kinetic energy (don't forget order of operations!). Homework is the Potential & Kinetic Energy worksheet. 

ELA - Students finished their Literary Essays and handed their packet.  They were then given the hour to read, take AR quizzes, or play Scrabble.  Reminder...last day to take an AR quiz is Tuesday, January 22.  NO late submissions.

Spanish I: Both worksheets handed out this week are due on Monday. Study for the 2.1 test on Monday.

Pre-Algebra: We had a quiz today.  No homework tonight!  Check grades to catch up on missing assignments.

Algebra: Homework:  Chapter 5 review.  Our test is next Tuesday.

Course 3: We reviewed for our test on Tuesday.  No homework.  5th hour-Review due Monday.
