Tuesday, November 26

Science: Worked on the conclusion and critique reflection of the "Is the Force With You?" lab. Lab planners should be completed when we return from break (most are already completed!) so that students are ready to work on writing their rough drafts. Monday and Tuesday Dec. 2 & 3 will be rough draft work days, rough draft for peer review is due on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Final drafts will be due on Friday, December 6.

Geometry: Went over composites of reflections over intersecting lines. Homework is the complete the composite of reflections over two intersecting lines worksheet. Quiz on Monday.


Humanities: Students completed the preliminary rounds of the Geography Bee in class today. No homework. Happy Thanksgiving!!

Corrective Reading and Resource Room Math:  No homework- enjoy the holiday!

 ELA - Students continued their Grammar Study with Lessons 2.4-Compound Nouns, 2.5-Nouns as Subjects and Complements, and 2.6-Nouns as Phrases.  We had the class period to work on it. Have a happy Thanksgiving and Chanukah!

Science: Momentum homework was returned and discussed. We then worked on making the graphs for our lab and went over data analysis. Data analysis should be completed for homework.

Geometry: Worked on the graphing calculator activity for reflections over intersecting lines and quizzes were returned. Homework is to complete the Composites of reflections over intersecting lines practice. Quiz on Monday.

RR Math & Corrective Reading: No homework in Corrective Reading or Resource Room Math.  If you did not turn in your reading log to me today, you must turn it in tomorrow for late points.  Also, if you did not turn in your math homework last week on Friday, you need to get that into me by tomorrow.  If you are all caught up on homework, have a wonderful night off!


Humanities: Students took the first round of the Geo Bee in class today. No homework.

Algebra: Today we reviewed.  The reviews and answers were posted on Friday, additionally here are the review stations and answers to review stations.. Good luck studying!!!

Spanish 2: The 4.1 quiz was moved to tomorrow. Ex 6.7.8 &9 pgs 256-257 are due tomorrow.

Humanities: Ms. Helms presented information on the Explore Test in class today. No homework.

ELA - We reviewed the grammar from yesterday and graded it for accuracy (we did 2 out of the 4 pages together yesterday).  We moved on and finished Chapter 1 of our Grammar unit with Lessons 9 & 10. AR quizzes will be printed on Monday and zeros will be entered for any students with no quizzes taken.

Spanish (Tomlinson): Flashcards for 1.3 due Dec. 2. Folder packets (from 1.2) due Dec. 2


Pre-Algebra: Today we explored methods for solving complex inequalities. Students will have a Chapter 3 test on Tuesday 11/26. The Chapter 3 Test will cover:

  • multi-step equation solving
  • translating verbal sentences into equations
  • solving area and perimeter with variables
  • solving word problems in which an equation is used to solve
  • solving and graphing inequalities 
Chinese: 5th hour: Learn 6 radicals of characters, and take Lesson 3 and 4's dictation. 6th hour: start to make Chinese calendar of your birth month.

Algebra:  I have posted both reviews (Review & Pre-Test) and the answers to the reviews (Review & Pre-Test).  Come Monday prepared to ask questions.  Test on Tuesday!

Humanities: Students watched a video on historical investigations in class. No homework.

ELA - Students continued their Grammar Study with Chapter 1 Lesson 7: Subjects in Unusual Order and Lesson 8: Complements: Subject ComplementsHomework: READ!  Students should be finished with two books by now, I will be printing AR Quizzes as soon as I am done with grading the Literary Essays (zeros will go in for the first AR quiz due).  Journal #20

Pre-Algebra: Today we review solving inequalities using addition and subtraction. We also took notes on solving inequalities with multiplication and division in our ISNs.  HW: One Step Inequalities Worksheet (this side only) solve and graph each problem


Course 3: We started one-step equations using addition and subtraction.  Homework is worksheet 3.1, evens only.

Spanish (Farah): WHAT WE DID TODAY: Today, we did more review for the test tomorrow.  We focused primarily on adjective and gender agreement, and vocabulary. We completed a packet and played 'Matamoscas.' HOMEWORK: Study for Chapter 1.2 TEST tomorrow, Friday, November 22.  ¡Buena suerte!

Science: Completed our Unit 2 notes by taking notes on Newton's 3rd Law and Momentum. Homework is the momentum worksheet.

Geometry: Continued our discussion of composite reflections over parallel lines through proofs. Homework is the Composite of reflection of parallel lines worksheet.

Resource Room Math:  You will have a test on Friday.  Your homework packet is also due on Friday.  If you show me your homework before Friday, I will grade it and help you with the problems you  may not understand so you do great on the test.

Corrective Reading:  Reading logs and five different reader's responses are due every Monday.  This is not optional.  Parents must also sign your log.



Humanities: Students turned in chapter 7 summative assessments and shared current events in class. No homework.

Chinese: Paper-cutting,making Chinese fan as Thanksgiving gifts, writing characters.

Spanish 2: Study the new vocab for a vocab quiz this Monday, Nov 25th.

Pre-Algebra: Today students utilized their problem solving strategies to solve an algebraic assessment task. I also introduced inequalities. We discussed the difference between an equation and an inequality, and looked at real-life examples of inequalities. HW: Solving Inequalities with Addition and Subtraction Worksheet (solve and graph all)

Science: Completed investigation 3-A (momentum and the 3rd law). No homework.

Geometry: Began composites of reflections over parallel lines. Homework is to finish whatever was not completed in class. Quiz on Friday.


Humanities: Students checked chapter 7 assessment and worked on answering the following questions from chapter 7.
-Why did we win the War?
-What did we get from our victory?
-What was the cost of victory?
-Was it worth it and why?
 Please note, the first three questions require fact based answers, while the fourth is an opinion question.  For the fourth question, students should use facts from the first three questions to form a strong argument. Questions and current events are due Wednesday.

Spanish (Tomlinson): Complete yesterday's assignment (due Wed). #9,10,14,18 pp.58-63. TEST on Friday --1.2

Corrective Reading:  Reading log and five reader's responses are due Monday.

Creative Writing: Today in creative writing we continued writing our persuasive essays. Intro paragraphs should be completed for homework as well as the first body paragraph. Read

Science: Today we collected data after two cars collided on the track to explore Newton's 3rd Law and Momentum.

Chinese: Making correction on Unit 1 quiz. Reviewing weekdays and dates.

Corrective Reading:  Reading logs are due today.  If you did not bring it in, you need to bring it in for late points in the grade book tomorrow.  Also, you new log will be passed out today, or you can print a copy of my blog, and it will be due next Monday (11.25.13).

Resource Room Math:  Homework is due this Friday and you will have a test on Friday.  Please try and turn your homework in early, and I will check it prior to the test.  Your homework packet is just like the test.

Humanities: Students checked Yorktown maps, read 7.4 and began to work on chapter 7 assessment in  class. Homework is to complete the chapter 7 assessment. Current events are due Wednesday.

ELA - Students turned in their Literary Essay Summative Assessment.  We began our Grammar Unit with a review of sentences.  Students will be given two lessons a day and then time to work with me on the grammar assignment, read, or take AR quizzes. Homework: Read, Journal entry #17, Grammar Lesson 1.1-1.2

Spanish (Tomlinson): 1.Finish what was not completed in class (due Wednesday): # 9,10,14,15,18 on pp.58-63. 2.Review study guide. 3.Test is Friday 11/22

Spanish (Farah): WHAT WE DID TODAY: Today, we went to the computer lab to work on a descriptions dialogue for our Voki Avatar. Students who did not return the Voki permission slip worked on Quizlet.com in preparation for our Chapter Test Friday, November 22. Our Vocabulary Quiz retake will be tomorrow Tuesday, November 19, due to lab availability today.  HOMEWORK: Study for Vocabulary Quiz Retake tomorrow. Chapter 1.2 TEST is Friday, November 22.

Science: Watched Bill Nye "Momentum" and went over the mass vs. weight homework. Quiz, corrections were also returned. 

Geometry: Went over the Transformation test review. Study for transformation test on Monday!

Corrective Reading:  Reading logs are due Monday.  Remember, if your parents do not sign off on it, you will not get full credit. Choose a different readers response for each of the five days. 

Resource Room Math:  Homework will be due next Friday, one week from today.  If you turn in your homework early I will check it so you can use it to study for your math test next Friday. Enjoy the weekend.



ELA - I apologize for not posting yesterday, I was out sick :(  I am in today, to help facilitate the final drafting process.  "Day 12" is a review of formating on the computer.  The students were shown this, we discussed it, and we reviewed how to make all this happen on a computer.  Final draft due Monday at the beginning of class.  Please check rubric to be sure all points are addressed.  Any problems with printing should be addressed during lunch, not as class starts. Homework: Literary Essay Final Draft, READ! Be sure you are at Journal entry #17 if not, writer over the weekend.

Humanities: Students reviewed 7.3 guided reading, worked on a map of the battle of Yorktown, and watched student news in class. If the map was turned in at the end of the hour, there is no homework.

Spanish (Tomlinson): Do "Práctica"--chapter review: para lunes (due Monday). TEST 1.2--Friday 11/22

Algebra:  Homework - IB assessment (if it wasn't finished in class) and Graphing Lines from slope-intercept form worksheet.

Pre-Algebra: Today we created an ISN page that orders that steps to solving algebraic word problems, provides helpful hints and gives an example to show each step. Science: Took notes on gravity, free fall and mass vs. weight. Homework is the mass vs. weight worksheet

Geometry: Worked on the transformation test review, which is due tomorrow. The transformation test is on Monday. 


Humanities: Students shared Revolutionary War letters and were introduced to 7.3 of the text in class today. Homework is to complete 7.3 guided reading.

Resource Room Math:  Homework packets are due next Friday.  I will review your answers if you turn them in early so you will be ready for the test next Friday.

Corrective Reading:  Read daily (at least 20 minutes/day).  Reading logs are due on Monday.  Remember, these are weekly points in the grade book.  You can use the books you are reading for your English classes if you would like.



Spanish 2: Study for a quiz on direct object pronouns on Tuesday next week and a quiz on the present progressive next Wednesday.

Humanities: Students reviewed 7.1 and were introduced to 7.2 in class. Homework is to assume the identity of a citizen/soldier during the War years, and to write a letter or diary entry in which you describe your experiences.  Please remember to use detail from the book in your writing.

Spanish (Tomlinson): Para viernes (due Friday)--# 6 and 7 on p.57. For #6-write in complete sentences, using the correct definite articles. For #7, write the name of the clothing and the correct definite article (the first 2 items are already done as examples)

ELA - Students brought their Rough Drafts to class and conducted a Peer Review.  Revisions and final drafts will be finished either at home or in class with the COW on Thursday and Friday.  Final drafts are due on Monday. Students should be finishing up their first AR book this week (to keep on track with one book every two weeks). Homework: Revisions to Literary Essay, READ! R. Room Math:  Packets are due next Friday 11.22.13

Corrective Reading:  Reading logs are due Monday.  We will continue to be working on writing an IVF summary the next few days in class before we get back to our reading.

Humanities: Today students finished watching the video about the American Revolution.  They then worked on 7.1 section assessment.  This is due tomorrow.

ELA - Today we worked on our Conclusion Paragraphs.  All work is to be copied OUT of the journal and on to LOOSE LEAF paper for a rough draft due tomorrow.  We will be holding a Peer Edit tomorrow so all work needs to be on loose leaf paper. Publishing will be Thursday and Friday, with the final draft due on Monday.  The requirements for all 8th grade final drafts are as follows:
Typed
Double Spaced
1 inch margins
24-36 pt font for TITLE
12 pt font for BODY
 In addition to the content rubric, I will be assessing students on IB Criteria A.

Science: Went over the Newton's 2nd Law homework from Friday as well as collected speed data as the car moves down an incline track. Quiz on Newton's 1st and 2nd law is tomorrow!

Geometry: Today we discussed rotations using protractors and doing rotations in the coordinate plane. Homework is to complete the rotation practice on pages 60 & 61 in the transformation packet. Rotation quiz is Wednesday, transformation test will be on Monday.



Humanities: Students reviewed 6.4 in the text, and were introduced to chapter 7 in class today. No homework.

Resource room math:  Homework will be due next Friday.  Study X facts daily.

Corrective Reading:  Logs are due today.  If you did not bring your reading log in today, make sure you turn it in tomorrow for late points.  Your next reading log is due Monday 11.18.13.

Course 3: We took the quarterly assessment today.  No homework.

Chinese: We are review for Unit 1 quiz by doing a practice test.

Art 7/8 hrs 1,4 & 5 Motif paintings have been completed. A showcase will be put together later this week in the front hallway. Students are now studying the artist Gustav Klimt. Each student will be designing their own version of Klimt's "Tree of Life." The art will be created using black Sharpie markers and colored pencils and will be designed using a grid method.

Advanced Art grade 8 hr. 6 : Daily still life drawings continue. Art project is a 6 part drawing. Six different views of an item. Each view done in a different medium. Demo today will include using charcoal pencils and graphite sticks.

Science: Completed investigation 2-B, analyzing acceleration on the incline and flat track to see what that tells us about force. Homework is the Newton's 2nd Law worksheet. Quiz on the 1st and 2nd law on Tuesday. 

Geometry: Took the translation quiz. No homework.

C. Reading:  Logs are due Monday.

Algebra:  We did more work on solving equations for different variables (putting equations in function form) and started section 4.2 (graphing lines using ordered pairs).  Homework:  wkst 4.2 (evens only)


Spanish (Tomlinson): Para lunes (for Monday): Do #1 and 2 on p. 54 (refer to dialog on pp.52-53). Bring in 5 pictures from magazines (or your own) of people or animals

ELA - Students worked with organizational structures and decided on the best structure for their Literary Essay.  We have 2-3 body paragraphs written.  Next week we will work on the introduction and conclusion. 
Rough Drafts are due at the beginning of class Wednesday, Nov 13th for a Peer Review Day.  Those not prepared will miss out on a great day of peer review :( Thursday and Friday we will have the COW for publishing and final polishing. Final Draft of Literary Essay is due Monday, November 18th (at the beginning of class) all final drafts are to be non-erasable. 

Humanities: Students reviewed 6.3 and were introduced to 6.4 in class. Homework is to complete 6.4 summaries.

Course 3: Quiz today.  No homework.

Creative Writing: Today in Creative Writing we continued with Writer's Workshop, persuasive research. Read independently, looking for (and tagging) signposts. Homework: Read, tag for signposts.

8th grade P.E. Question:   Describe three ways how your team effectively communicated during flag football games.  Give at least two challenges your team faced when trying to communicate during flag football games.  Were you able to overcome these challenges? If so, how? If not, why? What can you do to become a better communicator? Essays should be informative, neat, typed and completed on time. Papers are due on or before Monday, November 11.

Spanish 2:
Tuesday's worksheet and today's worksheet are reviews for the test. They are both due on Wednesday, Nov 13th, the day of the test. Answers will be posted Monday night.
Book exercises from yesterday are due by Monday's class, and we will go over them in class.


French I:

Geometry: Finished translations, homework is the 9.1 worksheet. Translation quiz is tomorrow!

ELA - Students continued their Writer's Workshop with Day 7 - Writing Connected Example paragraphs.  Between yesterday's lesson and today's lesson, students should have two paragraphs written for their Literary Essay. Homework - Finish paragraph, READ! Journal entry #8


Humanities: Today in humanities we went over 6.2 section assessment. Students were assigned the 6.3 question worksheet due tomorrow

Algebra- Today we discussed graphing coordinate points, quadrants, graphing functions from ordered pairs, function form, and rearranging equations in order to solve for a different variable.  Homework: 3.8 Rewriting Equations practice

Spanish 2: book exercises. Check my blog to see which ones. Due on Monday. 

French 1: Test grades are up on family access. Study the purple words on of 73 for a vocab practice quiz on Wednesday and the real one on Thursday.  Today's worksheet is due on Wednesday 


Pre-Algebra: Solving multi-step equations with negative coefficients, variables on both sides, distributive property,  and collecting like terms. HW: Solving Multi-step Equations worksheet


Course 3: We reviewed for our quiz.  There is extra practice on pages 280 - 282.

Science: Read and took notes on Newton's 2nd Law of Motion and went over the acceleration homework. Quiz on Newton's 1st and 2nd Law will be Tuesday, November 12.

Geometry: Discussed translations, homework is the translation practice in the transformation packet. Translation quiz is on Friday.

C. Reading:  Read daily.  Logs are due Monday.

R. Room Math:  Homework packets are due this Friday.  You will have a test this Friday.  I am happy to check your homework prior to the test.  If you can do the homework...you will be fine on the test :)


Humanities: Students checked 6.2 and shared current events in class. No homework.

Spanish (Tomlinson): Study flashcards for vocab quiz on Friday (quiz yourself AND have parent/sib/friend quiz you also)

Course 3: We have a quiz on lessons 5.1 - 5.4 on Friday.  Students were given the review today.  It is homework if they did not finish.

Creative Writing: Today in creative writing we began Persuasive Writing: Writer's Workshop, lesson one for our next paper. Practiced fact vs. opinion.  Homework: Read

Science: Completed investigation 2-A, comparing speeds of the car on the flat track compared to on an incline when mass is varied. No homework.

Geometry: Took the Reflection quiz. Homework is to read 9.1 and take notes.

C. Reading:  Logs due Monday.  Read each night.

R. Room Math:  Students will have a test Friday and their homework packet is also due on Friday.  If my students can do the homework, they will be fine on the test.  I am happy to look at the homework prior to Friday.


Humanities: Students reviewed 6.1 and began to work on 6.2 section assessment in class. Homework is to complete 6.2 section assessment and a current event for tomorrow.

If so, how? If not, why? What can you do to become a better communicator? Essays should be informative, neat, typed and completed on time. Papers are due on or before Monday, November 11.


Creative Writing: Today in creative writing we practiced different forms of pronouns and discussed the future Prezi project. Presented Reader's Workshop Lesson 4. In tonight's reading, pay attention to who holds the source of power in your novel.  Homework: Read 

Spanish (Farah): WHAT WE DID TODAY: Students worked in the lab. Those with signed permission slips created Avatars on Voki.com/classroom, and wrote dialogues for their Avatars to say. Those without signed permission slips logged onto Quizlet.com to practice the vocabulary words for Chapter 1.2. There is a vocabulary QUIZ on Friday, November 8.  HOMEWORK: Study Vocabulary words for Friday's QUIZ.

Science: 1st & 3rd hours got their tests back and went over the tests. 5th-7th hour took notes on Newton's 1st law and acceleration. The acceleration worksheet is homework.

Geometry: Finished practicing reflections, reflection quiz is tomorrow. 


8th grade P.E. ELA- Students identified reasons to support their claim for Literary Analysis Writer's Workshop.  Journals were handed back and the newest Teaching Point (Day 4) was written in as the first journal entry for the second marking period.  Homework: READ (remember another 5 novels should be read for 2nd marking period) Journal #2

Spanish (Farah): WHAT WE DID TODAY: Today, students will receive Vocabulary Lists for Chapter 1.2. We will also discuss gender agreement in the Spanish language. Students will receive a permission slip for the Voki Website.  HOMEWORK: Vocabulary cards should be completed for the new vocabulary list. Vocab Quiz on Friday, Nov. 8. Students must return the Voki permission slip in order to participate in tomorrow's lab. Voki is a website where students can create their own Spanish speaking avatar. Students will not want to miss this lab, therefore, please be certain that your child returns the signed permission slip. (Please see attached for extra slips) Students without signed permission slips will work with new vocabulary words in Quizlet.com
